Richard Prosser endorses Susan Devoy as Race Relations Commissioner? That’s the final lame horse of the apocalypse.
Judith Collins on RNZ this morning said ‘Annette Sykes is a stupid person’ for her criticism of this insane appointment of Susan Devoy as our new Race Relations Commissioner. Annette Sykes may be many things, but by God, she is NOT a stupid person. She is considered one of the finest legal minds in NZ and is deeply respected for her opinion. The same can not be said of Judith Collins.
Devoy was shoulder tapped for this role as a political dog whistle – she said she had been interested in disability area NOT Race. Collins is doing a whaleoil here, making an outrageous statement and then stamping up and down throwing a wobbly once the criticism for that decision starts rolling in.
After Devoy, Paul Henry will be appointed to the Broadcasting Standards Authority & Cameron Slater will be the new Surgeon General
Devoy’s appointment is a racquet.
Where do I start with this? Susan Devoy? What a sad little country we act like. Annette Sykes is the voice of reason. Judith Collins is a fool and she shows us that over and over again.
Careful what you say about disability. The disabiity sector fought long and hard for the position of Disability Commissioner. There is a an excellent and competent disabled person in that role at the moment. In the future, if the person appointed as the Disability Commissioner did not have lived experience of disability as well as a profound understanding of the politics of disablement, there would be as much as an uproar as there would be if a sexist man was appointed as the Minister of Women’s Affairs.

Now Devoy is unsure whether she is part-Maori.

Is she expecting these remarks to smooth things over? Personally, I know of many people throughout my life who are part-Maori and are rabid racists and especially anti-Maori. For many, is it due to their largely European appearance? Who knows what they’re thinking, but it demonstrates in the real world that those with some Maori heritage can be just as ignorant and insensitive to matters regarding Maori as those with no Maori heritage.
According to Prosser “I think she’ll be superb. I shared a plane with her once, a long time ago.” Regardless, having such a controversial personality endorse someone in this position with a controversial background is ultimately a disservice for them.
Is Prosser also possibly attracted to Devoy’s appointment because of a column she published where she thinks burqas are “disconcerting”?
In the warped world of Prosser; how dare they take his pocket knife (Excalibur Jr.) when boarding a plane and allow these “terrorists” ride a bus with a burqa (when the driver is not prejudiced). They must be hiding a bomb in there.
When you think this government has reached the apex of ugly, it amazes me that they can get even uglier. Just about the only progress they’re capable of.
Considering the ugly plans this government has in store, it’s easy to imagine why they’re interested in creating a stooge inHuman Rights Commision.

She needs to be encouraged to disqualify herself and step down on the basis of deeply ingrained redneck ideals, too old a dog to learn new tricks. Pity she is not on facebook, but maybe a letter or email campaign explaining to her why she is not the one. Not her fault she was picked, but good sense needs to prevail, a golden handshake?

If Annette Sykes is against her then Judith Collins has likely got it right. Give the woman a chance she is not even in the job yet.
