Having a mercenary for a Defence Minister – why we should all be frightened by Mark Mitchell

Mark Mitchell loves war so much he fought as a mercenary

I believe that Mark Mitchell is a very dangerous individual who should not be allowed anywhere near power.

It’s not just that a former mercenary shouldn’t ever be allowed to become the Minister of Defence, it’s not just that such a pro war apologist has no place in the Ministry of Defence, and it’s not just the insanity of a mercenary being asked to have an opinion on ISIS, it’s that Mark Mitchell was part of something far more dangerous.

He was part of Simon Lusk’s and Cameron Slater’s attack plan to radicalise the National Party

Simon Lusk is a far right-wing apparatchik who runs a private, self-styled “candidates school” for potential National Party candidates. Amongst those National MPs linked to Lusk are Taupo MP Louise Upston, Maungakiekie MP Sam Lotu-Iiga, Napier MP Chris Tremain, Rodney MP Mark Mitchell and former list MP Aaron Gilmore. Disgraced Minister, Judith Collins, is also an  associate of  Simon Lusk.

The media reported that some National Party insiders were so concerned by Lusk’s activities  that they leaked documents to the media in 2012, and the following year. At least one senior Minister, Michael Woodhouse, discussed his growing unease with National’s president, Peter Goodfellow .

National Party insiders were terrified when they discovered that Lusk and Slater were planning a take over of the National Party using MPs like Mark Mitchell to create a new hard right Government.

Allowing a mercenary who has been included in hard right plots to become the Minister of Defence is the sort of thing you might see in Homeland,  don’t ever take your eyes off Mark Mitchell.

  1. And thanks to The Daily Blog we can see the mad fucker coming.
If he gets past out our shock, fright now action-required responce then the problem is us, not him.
    Good work.

  2. This should be on the front page of the Herald & DomPost!!!!!!!

Oh wait a minute due to that government memo directive sent media already, they can’t print anything negative about the government now cant they???

Thank God we have Martyn Bradbury to let the cat out off the bag.

Where’s Gosman when we need a right winger to make fuss that we are suggesting that the Nactional Government agendas is to go hard right now????

  3. +100000%

Be very afraid. Yep, you thought Trader Key was bad, but Mitchell is a guy that thinks about war in terms of profit and loss and pays Slater a few thousand to nobble more experienced and worthy Natz opponents to gain political power. Sadly this works in our political system.

So Mitchell’s not afraid to use dirty politic on his own party! No one is safe from this guy now in charge of our defence force with zero morals who fights for the highest payer and his own ends.

  4. If even just a fraction of the people who dismissed Nicky Hager’s Dirty Politics had actually bothered to read it first, reminders from TDB about the murky past of Mark Mitchell would be completely unnecessary.

    (Chapter five: Simon Lusk’s Plan.)

Mitchell’s dirty money paid for dirty politics, against members of his own party.
Does anybody think Mitchell will hesitate to do the same to anyone who gets in his way?

  5. Speaking of Simon Lusk…seems like he was in a dirty politics plot to sink Hone Harawira and is an associate of Labour Party Stuart Nash …

…” Duncan Garner also revealed supporters of Labour’s Napier MP Stewart Nash paid Simon Lusk to canvas the option of a new political party, and that Simon Lusk had told him Labour MP Phil Twyford would be his next target.

Simon Lusk also claimed on Story he had been instrumental in unseating Mana Party co-leader Hone Harawira in the last election. Unnamed “businessmen” had paid thousands for that, he said. And in conversation with his co-host last Monday, Duncan Garner said money had been paid to get Maori electors to vote in Te Tai Tokerau…

    • @ Red Buzzard … Spot on there. Simon Lusk is pure evil, as proven in Dirty Politics.

The sudden promotion of staunch right wing Mark Mitchell to the high ranking Cabinet position of Minister of Defence, combined with the involvement of the filthy, gutter tactics of Lusk is an ominous combination, to be regarded with the utmost suspicion.

      Worrying? You could say that!

  6. Interesting , isn’t it,… how a small group of individuals can cause so much damage to a democracy…

And that just shows how fragile a democracy really is.

And so many people wouldn’t know or wouldn’t even care ,… but these dodgy characters must be shown for their subversive activity’s ,… over and over again.

Show their ugliness for all to see.

  7. And if my memory serves me correctly, wasn’t Mark Mitchell a police officer, before deciding on a mercenary career? Let’s hope he’s the exception rather than the rule in the type of people being recruited for police work!

Somewhat alarming to think someone of Mitchell’s aggressive mercenary background, all of a sudden rises to the extremely senior and important position of Minister of Defence! Yes, he needs to be monitored closely, very closely indeed!

    • The US has been interfering heavily in NZ and AUS politics since the Second World War. Just as the ’51 dispute was broken up by the CIA, so was Occupy – by foreign CIA agents posing as students, with local support. I can name them, and have named them.

To say a year ago that the waterfront dispute was broken by CIA agents flown in on Air America you would be discounted as a loon. Now that has been proven in the black and white, even if largely ignored by newspapers.

Mitchell is not just a gun for hire, in my opinion: a gun for hire rarely works so Catholicly but work for the highest bidder, which is always the US.

Farrer, Lusk and Co. are complicit in the National Party selection process, that is bang on. It is more of a tangling-up process: they get ’em young, Young Nats, and promise them the world so long as they get up to all manner of mischief. They investigate people thoroughly, and deeply, to determine their political affiliations, and John Key and others have used them like a private CIA. Increasingly, as we saw with Dirty Politics, the division between the GCSB and SIS and private intelligence operators was becoming blurred.

Of course the GCSB and the SIS are still lying through their teeth, or with open mouths. Who really believes that the organization that keeps records on everyone else doesn’t keep records themselves?

A dangerous era of other people’s wars and interference in the lives of others.

  8. He is one of the more dangerous mercenaries, but let us be totally honest, most working and business operating persons are these days nothing else but MERCENARIES. They only do things for money, for profit and selfish motives.

That is the society neoliberal advocates and politicians have created and forced upon us, most of us are nothing but desperate mercenaries, willing to sell our soul and body, to earn the money we need to survive.

  9. I understand Mitchell didn’t actually do any fighting in Iraq: instead, he spied on people and interrogated prisoners. Perhaps Stephen Lusk could clarify that matter for us? Alternatively, Mitchell’s fellow MP and Lusk client Stewart Nash might assist?
