Healthy Homes Bill needed to keep kids out of hospital – Labour Party

National’s promise to reduce child hospital admissions can only be kept by backing Labour’s Healthy Homes Bill, says Leader of the Opposition Andrew Little.

“National has promised to reduce child hospital admissions for preventable conditions by a quarter by 2021. If National is serious about reducing the number of kids admitted to hospital, they need to back my Bill for warm, dry, healthy homes.

“The majority of preventable hospital admissions for children are due to respiratory illnesses. These diseases are caused and worsened by damp, cold, mouldy housing.

“National has given up on its target to reduce rheumatic fever by two-thirds because the deplorable state of rentals is making too many kids sick. Rheumatic fever is now on the rise. The Government won’t meet this new target unless we ensure all rentals are fit for kids to live in.

“My Healthy Homes Bill will require all rentals to meet modern standards of insulation, heating, and weather tightness. It is a law that will keep kids out of hospitals and save lives.

“The Healthy Homes Bill is due back before Parliament next week. All political parties that want our kids to live healthier lives should support it,” says Andrew Little.

Railbikes on track for January … (“Wairoa Star” – Tues 2nd May 2017)

Railbike Adventures has received Wairoa District Council approval after group director Geoff Main presented at April’s forum.
Last month KiwiRail gave Mr Main and his group the green light for the railbike project after five years of lobbying and waiting.
The former Manukau dairy farmer wanted to present the plan to council now it is a step closer to reality. The entrepreneur’s
initial proposal included bringing railbikes to the entire Napier-Gisborne rail line.
Early last month, KiwiRail announced Mr Main had won the expressions of interest tender for the Wairoa to Gisborne section
of the line which includes the Beach Loop section.
Mr Main has always been aware of the state of the rail.
He said he was inspired to do something different so moved out of dairy farming and built boats for a while before changing
    to tourism.
“The design of the rail bike was easy,” Mr Main said.
“We have something here that is better than running trains – and we know it.”
The agreement has Railbike Adventures operating a cycle route on top of the existing rail tracks between Wairoa and Gisborne.
The option will retain the track infrastructure without requiring the capital expenditure or maintenance.
Railbike Adventures and Gisborne City Vintage Rail will work together to ensure their two ventures can operate safely on the
    Gisborne section of the line.
Mr Main said they had secured a 10-year lease, but in time they wanted to increase it to 30 years.
The bikes, which weight 35 kilograms, can be lifted on and off the track during the ride for people who are cycling faster and want
to go past others. He said people had inquired about running carts and buggies on the tracks, but they would be “hard work”
    compared to cycling.
“We wanted to directly tap into the cycling market.”
Mr Main added that unlike cycling on the road, people using the railbikes would not have to wear helmets.
The adventure would see the cyclists have the option of staying overnight or for a couple of days at Wairoa or Mahia.
Mr Main said they needed to be clever about keeping people in and entertained in the Wairoa area.
“It will need to be about a four or five day excursion,” he said.
Railbike Adventures would have to upkeep the maintenance of the rail and Mr Main said they had plans in place for potential
    track outages.
Development of the plan is ongoing. They also had a paraplegic model currently on the table, he said.
Council chief executive Fergus Power said it painted the picture of a “hot day and a cold beer” but asked if road rules applied when
it came to alcohol. Mr Main said there would be zero alcohol tolerance on the rail.
People would be able take their own lunch packs and supplies for the day, but there could be opportunities for other interested
parties to join in and provide these services, he said.
Wairoa mayor Craig Little said the work put into the project had been “well worth it” and wished Mr Main luck.
Mr Main said optimistically, they were aiming to get the rail bikes up and running by November, but realistically it could be more
    like January 2018.
“Building the bikes is the easy part,” he said.
The next step is to clear the damage to the line which will be weather dependant. Mr Main said this was likely to be the other side
    of winter.
