Welcome to 500 year floods – The only hopeful part that climate change will cause in NZ

Welcome to your future sleepy hobbits

Welcome to those 500 year floods every decade folks.

The grim reality of what our rapidly warming climate will do to us is starting to become apparent to even the most ignorant climate denier. The spate of extreme weather patterns we are seeing are directly attributable to global warming, and those extremes are quickly becoming the norm.

After the Tasman Tempest, we have country wide flooding now and there’s another low about to dump just as much rain upon us again later in the week.

Yet we as NZers, even while the extreme weather hits us, can still not connect this…

…to this…

…but such wilful ignorance I think is coming to an end because in NZ something wonderful is happening.

Rich people are being hit just as hard as poor people by global warming.

Their beachfront mansions on cliffs on the North Shore are ready to fall into the ocean…

…the exclusive suburb of Kohimarama faced mudslides and slips…

…the grim reality of politics in a country as smug and self satisfied as NZ is that change doesn’t occur until it’s the rich people who are suffering. The suffering of the poor simply doesn’t matter, look at the utter contepemt our neoliberal welfare state has towards the poor they crucify. Look at the way beneficiaries are treated the way the homeless are treated, the way prisoners are treated, the way young people are treated, the way women are treated, the way Maori are treated – every group in NZ who historically have little or no power are abused as a matter of fact, so their suffering doesn’t matter but sweet Christ on a bicycle, when rich people start hurting, then something must be done!

Watch how quickly the rich demand genuine political change rather than the cheap masquerade of progress currently being promised by the major political parties when their properties are the first to get destroyed by climate change.

Watch how quickly our gutless political class will suddenly change their tune on environmental solutions once the rich white volk start screaming.

Let’s all hope for the sake of the entire country that the North Shore mansions and expensive exclusive  suburbs are the first to drown because only then will we get real change.

  1. And while its sad their expensive homes are falling into the sea its hard to have sympathy for as we all know – not for them dossing down in some crowded community hall and eating sandwiches for dinner – oh no , we all know they have options ,.. a swanky hotel / motel , good food and some port to go with that dinner , insurance claims up to date AND LISTENED TO , … HELL !… probably even enough equity in other assets and trusts to buy another property with sea views…

The day they experience having to live in a car with their family’s while holding down minimum wage jobs and have to go on long waiting lists for urgent surgery and field invasive questions from MSW is the day I might , – just might , – have some sympathy for them.

Until then ,… they remain among those who had the political and economic clout to improve the lot of so many and yet chose not to.

And while not all are this sad way – there are far too many neo liberal bludgers and parasites just like them that are.

    Prove yourselves.

    My tears are precious.

I don’t just waste them on anybody with a sob story.

  2. The “once in 500 year flood” is the biggest bunch of fake news nonsense of the week (if not month) and they just keep repeating it like it’s actual facts. What are they basing that on? Please cite some historical records that support that claim… oh wait NZ has only been occupied for 700 years. Wake up people.

  3. NZ could be paragons of virtue when it comes to global warming prevention, pauperise themselves in the process and it would not make one iota of difference to global warming in a world wide context.

What we should do is pour funds into methane reducing strategies/R&D, subsidise extensive investment into public transport, but we should avoid subsidising electric cars (until the tech is ready and cost competitive there is no point).

As you well know political change happens when the average NZ’er is affected, until then the status quo remains. It it this way in every democracy worldwide so railing against this is utterly pointless.

Given the obvious delight you take in character assassinating the average NZ’er as a sleepy hobbit why bother? It’s clear you have no hope so what would you prefer – a benevolent socialist dictatorship!?

    • If we continue down the present path if denial and short term economics for the profit of a few, then widespread pauperisation will occur and worse.

Socialism is not a bad word but a description of regards for wider good. How that is implemented can vary widely.
To avoid socialism is a trap leading to gross inequality and fascism.

NZ has benefited widely form its more socialistic policies and been punished as we have moved away from them.

  4. Those who already have far too much will seek ways to profit from the ongoing calamity of planetary meltdown via financial scams such as carbon trading, carbon credits and other bullshit, and will then get involved in schemes to suck yet more money out of poorer people’s pockets via the establishment of ‘disaster relief’ companies, with arsehole politicians behind the scenes manipulating everything and profiting from much of it.

And, of course, city, district and regional council staff will continue promote everything that makes matters worse faster and lie to the general populace, as they have been doing for at least the past decade. Perhaps they will continue to churning out bollocks about ‘climate change being good for the NZ economy’……which it will be in a perverse kind of way when you consider that we have a disaster capitalism system.

412 ppm atmospheric CO2 is coming soon, perhaps in May of this year.

And Trump’s war, initiated on the basis of yet more lies, just like those told to justify the Iraq War, will speed up the planetary meltdown, of course.

  5. Careful what you wish for Martyn. The privileged will fight viciously to protect what they have – they will raid the state coffers to do so at the expense of everyone else.

    • The Natz government does not care about 90% of Kiwi’s. They pretend to care but the reality they just care about themselves, their cronies, their future job prospects and financials and the minimum they have to do to stay in power, generally that means dirty politics and nobbling opponents. Cheating is easier than actually doing something to run the country and change policy for the better.

Tax cuts works, because they need to fund that by state sell offs which enriches themselves and their crony backers and most voters are so confused by what the fuck is going on that they just go with what sounds like will benefit them and the dirty politics against their opponents nobbles the rest.

Labour and Greens need to start to empathise with a wider group of voters and try and understand what is going on. Instead of a punishment approach (some voters out there have money and they need to share it) with a fake positive campaign and more taxes will solve everything, they need to under stand WTF happened, why globally neoliberalism has flourished, how a theory has outwitted them. Look at the UK taxes, everywhere, does nothing but makes local’s poorer and keep the right in power.

Why after 30 years of neoliberalism maybe it’s time to turn to stop talking about the economy and money start talking about what money can’t buy. (Your house falling into the sea is one, clean air and water is another).

Among many other things neoliberalism has used migration and the division that creates to keep the ponzi scheme going including taking taxes out of local country, how the race card is actually being played by the right on both sides, (being against immigration is racist, being for immigration/free trade supports neoliberalism). The righties have both positions covered, that’s why they are winning world wide in the west!

Conservatives in the UK and the Republicans in the US has just replaced their right wing government with another right wing government, who’s further right.

The lefties just haven’t caught up and have lost touch with real voters, and got themselves into a group think situation that each election does not work and take in more voters in fact in Labour’s case they steadily lost them with last election being pro free trade with more local taxes and longer working longer for the middle class. The Greens also have been static.

Fucking forget about faux middle class concerns, WOF, flags. Mentioning child poverty in every speech is the equivalent to Miss Universe wanting world peace, it’s become a cliche. I’m sure Bill English also wants child poverty gone too, (by social bonds apparently and more restructuring).

Politicians words now have little meaning unless they dig a little deeper and delve a little deeper and show they actually care about this country and ALL the people in it.

Generally, Decency seems to have been forgotten in politics.

Key probably got the greatest kick out of fooling everyone with his casual banter and empty words spoken with fake conviction worthy of an Oscar.

The good news is, that at 2% popularity for Key the public might not have been so gullible after all and there’s hope for the left to replace Key’s fake emotions with real ones.

If Little and Labour survive the dirty tricks of the right to topple them, and Metiria and Shaw starts getting back to what money can’t buy in the Green movement. If all the opposition parties unite against what this government has done, I think the tide will turn.

    • thats been happening for last nine years there raiding the incomes of future generation to prop up a broken system borrowing to fund tax cuts cutting the cullen fund stealing from special needs children

  6. Exactly but not really going to change the government to sneer about it.

It is Labour and Greens chance to convince voters who didn’t vote last time or who voted the Natz to change their mind and vote for a government that is going to try to prevent climate change and be responsive to emergencies, not escalate it!

65% of voters are home owners and this is the time to be getting their votes and actually going with the current state of disaster, not go with some fakely positive, static scenario campaign worked out by the mostly out of touch media and communication types from AUT, that wouldn’t know what was happening to the average joe if they fell into their latte discussing how to appeal to the working folks with Keynesian vs Chicago economics.

  7. I read in the papers that the owners of the Herne Bay home and the Waiake home, both cliff side properties were very quick to state they were not concerned about their homes as engineers etc had told them they were well secured to their sites.

I bet they did – they would not want this news of their properties being compromised by the climate to have an effect on the equity they have in these mega mansions. Last thing they need is to be sitting on buildings that future vendors wouldn’t touch with a forty foot barge pole. These houses are as good as had it as far as anybody wanting to purchase them in the future.

It’s not as though people haven’t been warned about building or buying close to cliff edges, rivers or beaches which are eroding the riperian edges. Playing God just won’t cut it.

  8. Although the devastation that we are witnessing are virtually weekly events, TVNZ and the media still will not allow the words “climate change” to be uttered.

    • TVNZ and the media still will not allow the words “climate change” to be uttered.

Bloody Steven Joyce you can bet the bastard has all channels embargoed like Goebbels did for Hitler.

Joyce will twist the facts for his paymaster without any care of who is hurt from his twisted lies.

    • Don’t worry. On this blog even the Port Hills fire, started by an electrical fault, is blamed on Climate change.

      • Patrick, everyone is lying on this issue; NOAA, US Geophysical Union, NASA. Only you seem to be cheerleading for the ever-dwindling Flat Earthy Society.

It’s not that the evidence is not compelling – it is. But you don’t seem interested in evidence-based conclusions.

        • Ahem. @patrick. Wet lands is the purest example of a wind brake in Aotearoa/New Zealands natural world, amongst cantabury farmland, virtually impossible. And that is what climate change is.

  9. Yep can’t wait for those mansions to start sliding off the cliff faces and see the smug faces then. I am sure they will look a little less smug.

    • THE GLOBAL ELITIST CABAL ARE PLOTING THE DEMISE OF THE PLANET.

THIS IS SO THEY CAN REALISE THEIR DREAM TO RID ONE THIRD OF THE GLOBAL HUMAN POPULATION AND TAKE TOTAL CONTROL OF THE ENTIRE PLANET.

CURRENTLY THE ECONOMIC WAR THEM AND THEIR PARTNER GOLDMAN SACHS IS CARRYING OUT IS TO SLOW AT ACHIEVING THESE AIMS SO A WAR IS NEEDED TO SPEED THE PROCESS UP.

      RESIST THESE EVIL DOERS.

        • Yes JS Bark,

They make my blood boil, and I reach for the upper tag to much sorry.

Why doesn’t the gutless media pick this up, as my annual beach campsite is now slipping into the sea in Gisborne!!!!

We loose over a metre a year and the East Coast road is now eroding away and will leave many isolated in future for the first time ever.

The ancient coastal Māori tracks are now mostly gone and they will need to build a new road & hopefully rail inland at a major expense to all of us now.

    • wait to the insurance companies will not cover them we dont need to wait there insurance black zones once they cant be insured there worthless

  10. Ahem! we have to let our over-excited MSM have their little dreams of 500 year floods, you know.
Next they will be talking about Noah’s Ark and it will progress towards 1 million year extinctions.
Maybe one day we can get some informed information rather than imaginary drivel.

    • Runaway is widely denied as are most things that may be difficult to accept.

The denial mattes little except to slow human response with something more effective in survival preparation.

The denialists are a problem as are the polluters along with those promoting energy use and consumption, use of airlines and the throw away society seeking immediate comforts and increasing wealth.

The precaution principle is a survival strategy.

It looks as though we have left it too late by several decades and some excess billions of humans creating planet overload.

  11. it is wonderful to see rich peoples homes falling into the sea it will be even better when coastal property becomes uninsurable that is one thing rich people understand
