FACEBOOKWATCH: Poto Williams shoots own Party in foot while kicking home goal

An extraordinary attack on Willie Jackson by Labour Party MP, Poto Williams, effectively insinuating Willie Jackson supports rapists is as self defeating as it is defamatory.

From her Facebook Page…

…WOW. I haven’t seen political self mutilation like this since the Democrats destroyed Bernie to put in Hillary.

The second the Left manage to look like a unified Government in waiting, it manages to rip itself to pieces. We are seeing it with the Greens running in Mt Albert and we are seeing it right here with Poto Williams.

John and Willie didn’t handle the interview well at all, most of us were pretty critical of the tone and direction of it and on reflection they’ve both accepted that as broadcasters, but to take that interview as evidence that Willie Jackson somehow condones, accepts or supports domestic abuse or rape is jaw dropping in its vileness.  To conflate Willie’s participation in John Tamihere’s ‘Roast Buster’ interview into supporting rapists as Poto insinuates manages to highlight all that is alienating about Identity Politics.

The organisation Willie has led, the Manukau Urban Maori Authority has put an enormous amount of work and education into rape culture and its impact over the last 3 years. If one were to be blunt, one could suggest that MUMA (Manukau Urban Maori Authority) has done more dealing with the direct impact of sexual assault in the real world in the last 3 years than anything Parliament has achieved in the last 8.

It is remarkable self-defeating behaviour by the liberals within Labour.

The enemy of the working class are the National Party, the enemy of the National Party are the Labour Party and the enemy of the Labour Party is the Labour Party.

That’s pretty much politics in NZ right now.

Wellington Twitteratti will love Poto Williams, the wider voting public will see internal bickering in an election year.

In one Facebook post, Poto Williams has managed to rob Labour of a rare media win.

Meanwhile, the Ombudsman rules that there is no way anyone can ask any questions about Mike Sabin. Perhaps Poto’s target would be better aimed at the Ombudsman if her concern is about the abused rather than destroying Labour’s chances at the ballot box this year?

I’m imagining the phone call Andrew Little will be giving Poto will be a tad chilly.

  1. Yet another classic example of why Labour needs to die. Affordable housing, living wages and immigration… these are the issues that most affect the working poor.

    • If you really want a revolution you’d plane to take over the Labour Party once they’ve come to the conclusion that there economic thesis has been totally discredited

      • The civil war/revolution is going to happen, irrespective of what I “want”. You really need to buy a dictionary, dude: “Plan” “Their”

  2. It is reasonable for Poto Williams to raise questions. It is reasonable for Poto Willams to do things to garner attention for herself in her electorate. It is reasonable for Poto Willams to speak up on issues she cares about.
It is reasonable for her to have her principles about who she wants to work with.

And it is reasonable for Poto Williams after the election to spend another three years on the Opposition benches.

A stated inability to in good conscience work with him to help her party become the Government, is in itself a direct assistance to seeing that goal not likely to be achieved.

That inability to in good conscience work with him should see her resign from the Opposition benches after the election should she be elected and Jackson be on the team.

Gordon Kaye, René Artois on ‘Allo ‘Allo died recently. I can hear him saying “You stupid woman.”

    • well said. Or to put it another way in words many will be thinking but are reluctant to say: “What a silly bitch!” Maybe she’s been taking lessons from TT or her loyal servant Pita

  3. The Ombudsman needs a kick up the ass – if we citizens cannot get the true details about the Sabin affair disclosed even after a formal request to the Ombudsman what sort of justice is there available in this country for anyone. What the hell is “maintenance of the law” mean anyway. Were we all going to riot if the information was disclosed?

  4. Poto Williams was an outsider import to a solid Labour seat.

Her queue jumping caused some concern among the locals.

Willie gets imported into a safe zone on the party list so of course that queue jumping is going to put some noses out of joint…

    Aye caramba…

    • She’s my MP and she doesn’t represent me. Why doesn’t she speak out against Labour’s pro-landlords stance, or Labour’s pro-Kiwi speculator stance?

We have a lot of issues in East Chch and they won’t be solved by Labour’s policies. She won’t get my vote.

I wouldn’t have a problem with her speaking out against Willie if she also spoke out against the policies of Labour which ignore the problems in our community.

      • She’s also my MP but I’ve never met her or seen her anywhere.
Admittedly I live in an area that was only moved into the CHCH East electorate in the last election but that might be a reason to be seen in our suburbs.

I don’t know what she is doing but surely hope she’s assisting people still trapped in EQC and insurance hell 6 years after the quakes. I also hope she’s doing something about the sell off of State housing also the homelessness and poverty in this electorate.

        • I know lots of people who have been helped by her office with EQC issues and she has been active on the housing issues a lot – so I would expect her to be active on the sell-off.

    • There’s quite a difference between the two processes:

      1. Williams was already a member of the Labour (so needed no waiver) and went through the full seat selection process and a panel, which included a vote from members and two representatives from the local electorate committee.

      2. Jackson has just joined, so will need a waiver from the Labour council. He wants to be a List MP and has apparently been promised a ‘winnable’ spot. The problem with this is that it’s not Little’s decision to make – it’s the membership (indicative by region) and then the governing council.

  5. No. The people who shot the Labour Party in the foot were the people who decided it was a good idea to have Willie Jackson as a candidate.

    • Quite right – Poto williams was at O’kains bay for the Waitangi celebrations good on her, she is a good woman and sometimes it is necessary to speak out and thank goodness she has – most of them tow the line and sit waiting to move up the benches, gutless.

      • She’s a good woman who won’t have to tow the line and sit waiting to move up the benches, she’ll move up the benches by dint of being in a safe seat and having hardly any others of her “colleagues” making it into the House.

  6. The enemy of the working class are the banks, the corporations, the opportunists and the bought-and-paid-for political system that ensures nothing is done about banks, corporations and opportunists (other than to facilitate their agendas) whichever party is in power.

The enemy of the working class are the mainstream television, radio, magazine, and ‘newspaper propaganda machines that continually misreport and mislead in order to keep the masses trapped in ‘The Matrix’.

It will make almost no difference which political party forms the core of the next government because the system will continue to be owned by banks, corporations and opportunists. And the system will continue to drive everything ‘off the cliff’.

  7. For goodness sake you plonkers. Carry out your bickering in house .Not in public ,you claim to be members of the Labour Party well act like members not creepy Tories ,who will use any means to split Labour ,More so now that they are running scared ,Their beloved Leader has deserted the sinking ship and left them with a twice looser and double dipper . he’s onhis why out so let’s not attack our own people . Save your criticisms for those anti-worker ,anti union ,
and selfish “I’m all right Jack ‘ Nat’s .They are the enemy so use any
anger you have to make sure they defeated and defeated badly .

  8. Well, given her spokesperson areas of responsibility Poto was right to raise some concerns, but it was obviously not wise to send this out via Fakebook.

And from what I have heard, Willie had already apologised quite publicly on repeated occasions, hence he was allowed to continue with Radio Live, while John T. was more or less given a send off.

There is a way to do things, when a member is not happy, but this was a stupid move indeed. Never go public with criticising other admitted members and/or candidates, unless first discussing matters internally.

I am more worried though about Willie’s own stand on charter schools and on Whanau Ora, while Labour have been highly critical of both. This makes it look like opportunism by Labour, to get Willie Jackson on board, as he has quite a strong public profile.

It seems Labour is prepared to make even more compromises with various interest groups, and persons, which only creates more of a blurred picture for what Labour really stands for.

We know how vague or even silent they are on welfare policy.

My party vote will definitely go somewhere else.
