UNICEF frequently reports widespread, systematic and institutionalised ill-treatment of Palestinian children by the Israeli Army, with armed soldiers seizing children as young as 11 years and taking them prisoner. Palestinian homes, even in UN refugee camps, can offer no security for terrified children, who are dragged from their homes, often in the middle of the night.

With the complicity of the international community, the founding of the Zionist state forced the Palestinian people from their land and created the largest single refugee population in the world. Palestinians in the West Bank have been living under a foreign military dictatorship for almost 50 years and their children, in particular, suffer grievous harm at the hands of the Israeli Occupation forces. The human rights organisation, Military Court Watch, has lodged submissions with the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention that relate to Israeli war crimes. Armed forces constantly abduct Palestinian children and transfer them to prisons inside Israel in violation of both article 76 of the Fourth Geneva Convention and the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court. This practice is internationally recognised as a war crime, and hundreds of Palestinian children are subjected to it every year. Evidence collected by Defence of Children International-Palestine (DCIP) during 2014 showed that more than three-quarters of Palestinian child detainees endured some form of physical violence between the period of their arrest and interrogation. Prolonged periods of solitary confinement, that international law recognises as torture, are often used to ‘soften up’ child captives for interrogation.

Recently, on 28 November, 49 Australian Parliamentarians signed a statement, calling on Israel to stop using its military power over an Occupied people to abuse Palestinian children. The campaign was initiated by the Australia Palestine Advocacy Network (APAN). In their statement, the Australian lawmakers reminded the world that “Israel is the only country in the world that automatically prosecutes children in military courts. And only Palestinian children.”

In violation of the Fourth Geneva Convention, the captive youngsters are taken out of Palestine to Israel, where they face what UNICEF describes as an “institutionalised” court procedure to which no Jewish child would be subjected. Most are deprived of legal counsel during interrogation and even the support of a parent is denied to many. The children are pressured to sign ‘confessions’ written in Hebrew, which to most of them is a foreign language and so, not surprisingly, these racist Israeli court procedures produce a 99% conviction rate for the up to 700 Palestinian children taken prisoner each year. The 49 Australian Parliamentarians deserve praise and recognition for action that should inspire all Parliamentarians, worldwide. Our own Government has a duty to make representations at the Security Council to demand measures be put in place to force Israel to stop this – continuing silence and inaction will only afford shameful cover for Israel.

Israeli Army child-targeting terrorism – video
The maltreatment of Palestinian youngsters is an integral component of Israel’s population-control industry. Palestinian children have to live (and sometimes die) under Israeli air strikes, home invasions, shootings, stun grenades and choking tear gas. There is no security for them, whether it be at home or in refugee camps, hospitals, schools, sports grounds, beaches or simply the streets. As 2016 draws to a close it is timely to take a look at the hateful Israeli Army and settler violence against Palestinian children committed since the beginning of the year. Watch this online video of Israeli soldiers terrorising and kicking a small child and remember it whenever you read about abduction (blindfolds, hands tied etc.) Recall it again as you read of home invasions (children dragged from their beds – parents humiliated in front of them) and bear it in mind whenever you see reports of child torture, death and injury. The numbers of families evicted from their homes because of Israeli Army exercises and reports of the destruction and/or vandalism of Palestinian houses and tent dwellings etc., that daily and nightly traumatise Palestinian children are far too numerous to recount here but should also be borne in mind as you read below the selection of just a few examples of Israeli Army acts of violence and terror meted out to Palestinian children during 2016.

From 1 January to 5 December 2016 there were:
26 children killed, plus one death from injuries inflicted in a 2011 Israeli air strike (see below).

About the author

Leslie Bravery

Leslie Bravery is a Londoner with vivid World War Two memories of the Nazi blitz on his home town. In 1947/1948 His father explained to him what was happening to the Palestinians thus: “Any ideology or political movement that creates refugees in the process of realising its ambitions must be inhuman and should be opposed and condemned as unacceptable.” What followed confirmed this assessment of the Zionist entity a hundredfold. Now a retired flamenco guitarist, with a lifelong interest in the tragedy of what happened to the Palestinian people, he tries to publicise their plight. Because the daily injustices they suffer barely get a mention in the mainstream news media, Leslie edits/compiles a daily newsletter, In Occupied Palestine, for the Palestine Human Rights Campaign. These days, to preserve his sanity, he enjoys taking part in a drama group whenever possible!

  1. Sally's Husband says:

If Israel thinks their aggressive behaviour will help create peace in their region, they are sadly mistaken. Violence breeds violence and terrorising people creates hatred. Sowing the seeds of their own destruction.

    • Steve King says:

This is what is completely incomprehensible about the Israeli government’s approach. They must know that they are sowing more bitterness, hatred and deepening the divisions between Israelis and Palestinians. As well as unjust, it is just plain stupid. Do they just expect the Palestinians to accept that they are to be stripped of their land, harassed and intimidated, and not object, protest, resist, or retaliate? Can anyone explain the thinking behind this approach?

      • Brewer says:

Quite easily. Keep the pressure and propaganda on full noise until the West Bank and Gaza explode then be “forced” to annex. In a word, expansion.

  2. Lois Griffiths says:

Martin and I have met some of the international lawyers, including Australian Gerald Horton, who carefully authenticate every abuse they report. The treatment of Palestinian children by Israeli ‘setters’, the IDF, the Israeli police is sadistically cruel. And as long as the West looks the other way , will, sadly, continue.

    • andrew says:

Do these “international lawyers” also carefully authenticate every abuse by Muslims against Jews?

Or do they look the other way like most on the Left?

      • Andrea says:

Let us suppose they do as you say – authenticate every abuse by Muslims against Jews.

Could you be a little more specific as to the location of these abuses? Both are trans-national religions embracing many ethnicities and nationalities.

If they are ‘international lawyers’ and they are building a case to take to the appropriate court, where the legal wrangles may well go on for years, they must, of course, know what information and facts the defendants might bring before the court.

Looking away seems to follow the local road code ‘look Right, look Left, look Right again’, and then ignore because it all seems so terminally hopeless and where on earth do you start to get Israel to remove its collective thieving fingers from other people’s property?

(I wonder if these ‘international lawyers’ have also documented the persistent Muslim colonising of Jewish lands, including bulldozing homes and orchards and destroying schools paid for by international donors. Do you happen to know? Balancing the atrocities and insults in the Book of Things seems the Right thing to do, don’t you think?)

There are villains on either side but Israel, as a nation, is a bully, tells lies, and steals. There are definitely good people within who speak out though. Not all are Zionists.

If I was Palestinian and I saw my family and neighbours being treated so – I’d throw stones and lob pitiful little rockets, too. But I’m a social libertarian, not a died in the wool Rightist. Appeasement and quitting are not options when culture and life itself are at risk, are they?

It is important to recognise that the missiles and stones came from the Arabs first. From day one of Israel becoming a country, it has been under attack. Initially by conventional forces and later using irregular forces because Israel beat them in the battlefield. Going back even further, Jews were being killed by Arabs in the 1920’s by Muslim mobs in Haifa.

It is also important to recognise that in 4th generation warfare your mind is a dimension of the battlefield. Here the Arabs apply lots of oil revenue to ensure the media present a fairly one-sided view of the issue. It is beholden to you all to get a deeper understanding of the history and the issues if you’re going to comment on it.

Israel – phony state set up by Rothschilds – seat of power is US Congress:

(and in the US Congress are where the architects of Pizzagate (satanic pedophilia) and all the horrors it holds can be found).
When General Dunford announces the return to the Constitution and the Republic of the United States this house of cards and the leadership of Israel (poss Turkey) will go up in smoke – or preferably into the FEMA camps intended for the innocent but ignorant US citizens.

I am all for holding Israel responsible for their crimes, but when you have Hamas and others use kids in propaganda, this does not help.
