Pike River families will continue to protest at the mine gates tomorrow morning following Solid Energy’s total refusal to discuss re-entry of the drift to recover bodies and evidence.
Bernie Monk, whose son Michael died in the mine, says the meeting was insulting. “Solid Energy are refusing to even meet with any of the many experts who have said safe re-entry is possible. They’re not even pretending to listen anymore.
“Frankly there’s no point in trying to deal with this company any longer. The Prime Minister is the one who made the promise to get our boys out, and he should front up himself rather than sending his monkeys to deliver the hard word.
“What makes it worse is the seal already in place complies with Worksafe’s conditions. There’s absolutely no need to pour 30m of concrete in there.
“It feels like they’re just doing it because they want this whole thing to go away.
“Well, we’re not going away. We’ll be at that gate, we’ll be at the gates of Parliament. We’ll do whatever it takes to get the justice we were promised for our boys.
“It’s safe to get in there and get the evidence out, and that’s what’s going to happen.”

  1. Our HB Family is right behind you, and a lack of care and support for your community from Government is cruel and vicious, as I say if it were Government family members trapped in the mine it would have been reopened in a heartbeat, so vote for a kinder gentler government next year and help rid this evil uncaring mob.
