Prime TV and Sky TV deserve to take a bow. Their courageous Pike River Mine doco on Monday night was riveting, full of drama and finally gave NZers a chance to understand the abomination that our insanely under regulated safety standards allowed to occur.

The acting, the pace and the dialogue cut alongside those who lost loved ones was emotionally painful, raw and utterly engrossing.

The authenticity of the doco allowed people to understand the tragedy with enough damning oversight to made it clear that corporate greed and ridiculous safety standards were to blame.

The deregulated environment that allowed this tragedy to occur has seen no real changes, corporates continue to endanger worker lives, we have one of the worst rates of worker death in the developed world and no one, not one person from the company has been held to account in any real sense.

Our political leaders and our mining industry leaders let those men down and John Key has let the families down by not returning their bodies to those families.

Congratulations to Prime TV – 5 stars

  1. Shit!, bugger!, I missed it, – can you put up a copy for review?

I am squarely in solidarity with my west coast cousins in their grief and search for closure & justice for all workers here.

Government must be sacked come election time for this callous uncaring manner in which they show no concerns for public issues such as this and many other losses we all are facing daily.

  2. I agree. It was really well done and it was indeed tragic. Yes the men and their families have been let down by many

  3. Yes ,it was very well done. Initially I was sceptical because of our medias habit to whitewash everything that doesn’t have a positive spin for our government, however I have nothing but praise for this documentary. Just a huge pity that it has taken so long. Hopefully this will give a huge boost to those fighting for justice to be done over the whole debacle.

  4. Accountablity is something that is unheard of today. Well, in the pike river case, it needs to come back!
Don’t let the mine be sealed! A full investigation should begin, and closure be brought to the families involved.

  5. Despite John Key’s repeated PROMISES to bring the bodies out of the mine they -and he – want to seal it off forever, with the bodies still in the mine!

It’s not getting the bodies out they are concerned about – it’s much more the damning evidence still in the mine that will show the total failure of the government and the company in so many aspects of the operation. If such evidence saw sunlight it would cost the government and its money-grabbing corporates millions in recompense to the dead miners’ families, and others.

So they seal it off forever and walk away with their pockets still full and smarmy smiles in their faces.

That’s not governance; that’s treachery of the worst kind.
