The shocking truth behind why Correction’s rehabilitation rates are failing is a case study in how ‘get-tough-on-crime’ rhetoric and a lynch mob electorate more focused on punishment are creating horrifically counter productive ends for our wider society.

If you talk with anyone involved in trying to reintegrate prisoners into society, time and time and time again the problem is with Probations.

Like so many of our burnt out and underfunded public services, the supposed ‘service’ being rendered to prisoners via Probations are nothing short of false promises and purpose built policy designed to trip the prisoner up and return them to prison.

There is no attempt at reintegration, just hastily thrown together rules that are designed to return prisoners to prison, not prepare them for the community.

What’s happened is that NZ Prisoners are now serving incredibly long sentences, getting no rehabilitation and exploding when released. Corrections and Probation have responded by drafting up ever more complex rules to catch prisoners out so they can be returned back to prison. This after they’ve served their sentence remember. We are now building a shadow prison population of GPS tracking detention and ‘unit’s built upon prison grounds.

Right now there is a legal test case in Hamilton where Probations have applied for an Extended Supervision Order on the last day of a prisoners 6 month conditions from jail. Note the prisoner hasn’t breached any of their conditions, Probations are just trying it on so that they are able to send prisoners back to prison, not for committing new crimes, but for breaching Probation imposed restrictions.

The Community freak out when these untreated and damaged people are placed back into their neighbourhoods and Probations and Corrections respond by cracking down on Prisoner conditions so much so that the Prisoner ends up failing and get returned to prison.

None of this is examined by the mainstream media because it’s too complex and the community has no sympathy for prisoner rights.

This social policy has been damaged by spite and the harvest is simply more corporate incarcerated misery. We could be rehabilitating prisoners, we could be re-intergrating them into society, we could have a prison system that heals as well as punishes, but the money needed for that the Government wants to blow on a tax cut to the richest.

This is a political decision to allow a Prison Empire to be built, it is not an economic or socially just one.

  1. We have a fascist government and Corrections staff are just following orders. This government is hell bent on mind controlling the population any which way, just look at who’s spying on whom. If the population is fragmented, frightened, mind-controlled, emotionally unbalanced, committing suicide, and generally worried about just about everything and wary of their neighbour, this government sees it as a win for their overlords. It’s a policy of the Bilderberg and intended to destroy selected communities in countries. Nothing will change until we take back our Power and say NO MORE.

  2. Profit should never, ever be a motive or factor in prisons. The moment prisons become an “industry” we have truly embarked on the road to hell.

The ideal for prisons is that all inmates are rehabilitated and prisons closed down. That conflicts directly with the commercial imperative of more “clients” to create ongoing profit for shareholders.
