“There will be an on water flotilla to oppose the visit of the US warship and any other navies that are coming,” said Auckland Peace Action member Valerie Morse.
“This warship visit is about preparing New Zealand for war. The naval war training exercises in the Hauraki Gulf are the real reason for this US warship visit,” said Ms Morse.

“The warship visit is happening in conjunction with a weapons expo showcasing companies including Lockheed Martin, the world’s largest arms dealer. The weapons business benefits a few at the expense of the lives of millions around the planet. We don’t want it, and we don’t need it,” said Ms Morse.
“People will be turning out to oppose the government’s week of war making in November. Instead, communities are creating a week of peace action directed at stopping those who profit from and glorify wars.”

The only U.S. ships carrying nuclear weapons are the carriers and subs. The only U.S. navy ships that rely on nuclear propulsion are subs and carriers.
The replacement Zumwalt class will not be nuclear propelled either. And all of the cruisers that are run on nuclear propulsion have been decommissioned.
The USN is now a limited litoral and strategic navy, mainly intended to operate off the coast of China and around Russia notably in the Black Sea and Baltic to intercept missiles aimed at Isreal and Saudi. Secondly they attempt to protect the CVNs which are obsolete and deeply contaminated and unlikely to last more than a couple of days. One has to doubt the wisdom of Obama’s naval policy of running these cold war destroyers in the Black Sea as historical experience suggests the Bosphorous and Dardnelles as they constitue a difficult narrow exit and US policy violates the ABM treaty.
The USN has not carried nuclear weapons since about 1992 but new nuclear versions of Tomahawk will appear.

A friend sent this email to me, I post it here just so you have a deeper understanding of the Sampson’s role, hence my unwavering opposition to it’s proposed NZ visit.
“Approximately three weeks ago (26th September 2016) the destroyer USS Sampson moved to its new home port, Naval Station Everett in Washington State. There the Sampson became part of Destroyer Squadron 23 supporting Carrier Strike Group 11, the flagship of which is the USS Nimitz. The Nimitz is a super aircraft carrier, one of the largest warships in the world.
The Nimitz currently being refitted at the Kitsap Naval Base is powered by 2 Westinghouse A4W Nuclear reactors. The only ships to use these nuclear reactors are the Nimitz class super-carriers, which have two reactors rated at 550MWt each (1,100MWt). To put that in perspective the Higashidori Nuclear Power Plant in Japan that was commissioned in 2005 and whose operation was suspended following the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster also generated 1,100MWTs.
The Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II is a family of single-seat, single-engine, all-weather stealth multirole fighters undergoing final development and testing for the United States and partner nations. The fifth generation combat aircraft is designated as dual-capable as it is designed to perform ground attack and air defense missions.

The interesting thing is that the Royal Navy and French Navy aren’t attending the 75th anniversary (Wed 19/10/16 Q/6 in the House Prof Kennedy-Graham to PM Key) Given that the RNZN and RAN have never been more than an extension of the RN at least as far as the male officers are concerned it is extraordinary. Have a look at the RAN officers and senior ratings when there alongside and in the bars and they are hardly distinguishable from a RN crew. That includes the women and if you think anything has changed study say the TV/DVD of the last days of the RN Carrier Ark Royal in 2004 or on the last cruise of a 30 year old T class RN SSN Aged 30 thru Gibraltar to the Gulf. Its still magnificently elite, with elite officers, arrogance contempt for any lower grade fattie or prole there req to accept as an officer and women officers and screen operators selected striclty on bedable interest. Key should have encouraged RNto send one of their few RN T@3 frigates by sponsoring free double at the Sebel etc for RN crew to do the acceptable thing and delay copulating with their latest onboard love till they get a room in the hotel at port stops. While the wartime RNZN cruisers Archilles and Leander undoubtedly defended NZ with valiant action in the major battles in the Solomons and Gunadcanal 2000 miles and the Gambia served us with participation in the main RN/French Pacific fleet the post war Dido cruisers were really RN cruisers under RN officer control and RN cruiser Nelson 1805, level discipline. Most of the significant officer postions and senior ratings were RN , the Maori ratings loaded the heavy guns and maintained the engines in the constant 140F height. The RNZN operated frigates as part of the USN only during the Kirk/ Rowling period. Nixon so hated Whitlam that the RNZN was effectively incorporated into the USN and operated as part of it while Kirk was treated as a hero in the US given parades down every US Mainstreet, to give the fingers to Whitlam, even though late 1972/3 Time/ Newsweek show NZ was regarded as just another exteme left wayward southern cone nation like Chile, Australian and the Argentine oppostion .Late 1972 internal debate in the US Cabinet and the closed White House circle of Nixon and Kissinger alternated between blowing up Whitlam in his car and launching another 3 cruiser action, with a fast run up the Haipong river for heavy action against Jane Fonda. The 1960s and 1970s T12 and Leanders were just fairly standard RN frigates with RNZN officers trained by the RN and indoctrinated in to First Lord Moutbatten, Kreigsmarine tradition. They were completly useless of course as the RNZN unlike the RNdid not wire its frigates for NDB use and deterence and we brought none of the essential munitions or systems the anti ship missiles to hit subs on the surface or decoys heavyweight depth charges and heavy helicopters. The Leanders were far more useless than the Didoc cruisers which covered the 3200 miles from Suva to Pearl Harbour at 19 knots while the Leanders made it at 13 knots draining the tanks to the reserve limit. The real NZ Navy was of course the RNZAF Orions and Skyhawks which supplied by McDonnel and Martin fully wired for nuclear use against Juliets or Foxtrots in the Tasman on the surface preparing to launch and it was only the Orions of course which operated against the Soviet Navy ( Harrington., Kiwi Orions , tracking and finding boomers off the coast of LA and tracking Soviet cruisers and destroyers off Singapore.
The main Tasman defence system is of course the Australian Collins subs a notoriously unreliable and ageing piece of kit which Russia is likely to destroy, immediately in war, on the surface in Australian ports along with all the Collins base and infrastructure with long range cruise missiles fired from Ageing bombers over Nth Aus. During the Syrian campain Russian Blackjacks and Backfires have flown 13,000 mile 10 hour mission flying from bases in the Koala Peninsular down the English coast, centerlining the Gibraltar straight and proceeding up the Med to hit targets in Syria and returing to Engles (Moscow) thruy Iraq and Iranian airspace.
