TV REVIEW: The Nation – Why Murray McCully must be sacked but why Key can’t

Murray-McCully-present

It was a complete accident that I stumbled across The Nation on tv3 this morning. I haven’t seen it for a long time, but my God there is nothing like losing Tim Watkin as an Executive Producer and threatened with loss of their NZ on Air funding to remind TV3 of its fourth estate obligations.

This episode was excellent.

The interview with Key showed how utterly out of touch he has become with the reality of poverty in NZ. His shrugging off of the poor living in their cars and admission that he has no interest in bringing the property bubble down shows why he has to replaced. His total lack of empathy is more Hannibal Lecture than democratic leader of a country.

The real story however was Murray McCully finally under some scrutiny. For those of us who have been watching this fiasco unfold, the fact McCully still has a job is jaw dropping. The investigation helped piece it all together and highlight that McCully’s bribe to a disgruntled Saudi businessmen and open flirtation with live sheep exports were to try and get a free trade deal with a country who crucifies, whips, beheads and fuels much of the radical terrorism we are supposedly fighting.

The irony of this Minister misleading his Cabinet to gain a free trade deal with a country who treat Women with less respect than our live sheep should be lost on no one.

McCully of course should have been fired the moment this deception was exposed.  His own personal connection with the Saudi Businessmen via his long term consultant Michelle Boag should have immediately ruled McCully out from making any policy decision that then favoured the businessman.

But he hasn’t been punished and won’t be punished for two simple reasons.

The first is that McCully tried to cut this deal because it was Key who had assured the Saudi Businessman that live sheep exports would restart so McCully is covering for Key and a move against McCully would mean McCully would reveal this.

The second reason he can’t sack Muzza is because McCully would call a by-election and then stand as an independent threatening the balance of power.

Key is stuck with Murray because Murray has got a gun pointed at Key’s head.

They don’t call Murray McCully the ‘Dark Prince’ because he’s a Royal Goth.

  1. We watched it this morning as well. Incredible. So much for Key setting high standards for his ministers!!

If this doesn’t alert Transparency International that there is corruption in NZ, then they’re not paying attention.

Just think, if this had been done by a Labour minister under Clark’s administration, the entire Fourth Estate would be all over this. And idiots like Farrar and Slater would be frothing at the mouth demanding heads rolls.

But this is Key. Pony-tail tugger; serial liar; and chronic “amnesiac”.

    • Agreed, nothing yet in this mornings herald on this topic. The fourth estate has been told to stay clear, clearly. I did note it was number one item on the news last night and even Hooten pounced on McCully.

    • The best advice i can give if you want a good weekend is DONT watch this crap !!!
I stopped a long time ago as i was so appalled and outraged at the behaviour of these people so called journalists clearly in the National party Key club , lefties and even the pretend ones got lined up and dressed down and interupted at every opportunity and talked over
It was a waste of the poor bastards time time and effort just so they could get a negative sound bite for the 6pm news.
It just angers up the blood and its an obnoxious guest to invite into your home.
      Dont let them in.

  2. I am glad you stumbled over it, Martyn, it seems that as of recent, since the departure of Mark Weldon, at least some of their journalists are rediscovering their profession and a need to provide real news and current affairs. Indeed, I have watched the Nation on and off, so I did this morning, and I was so impressed, I had to rub my eyes repeatedly, whether this was true, what I saw and heard.

Murray McCully is history, so much is sure, he is due for retirement anyway, but this will bury his remaining political career, for sure.

Key was just out of touch, as always, and I was somewhat surprised how that Gower character did dig into him this time, somewhat relentlessly, and he let Key give his answer re McCully, knowing already, they had stuff that will embarrass not only the foreign minister but Key himself, the man in charge.

I got the impression that Newshub are now ready to put the axe into this government, to dig its grave, as even their news were leading with the Saudi Sheep Deal story and also showing Key and Nats in bad light, having no new ideas and policies, apart perhaps Paula Benefit to now start erecting a few prefab cheap temporary homes on government land in Auckland, to house those desperate enough to sleep in cars or Maraes.

What a hopeless government, many viewers will have thought, what a joke, a sick joke of a government.

The party is over for Nats, that is what this all tells me, they are goners now, when even the MSM start getting the message and report on the sad truth.

  3. I do not share the view that McCully has such power over the PM, he will be history soon, the OAG report will probably do the rest of the job. He will also not run as an independent, he has had his days, he knows it and will retire, with a golden handshake paid by us dumb tax payers, who subsidise this rort of these bastards at the top, doing no good.

  4. McCully is not standing at the next Election he is definitely well past his Best Before Date, anyway he needs to be made accountable for his Saudi Sheep Deal and all the facts need to be presented to the general public.

Accountability and transparency are not one of National’s strong points?

  5. Top of your game there Martyn! words so eloquently beautiful.

“The first is that McCully tried to cut this deal because it was Key who had assured the Saudi Businessman that live sheep exports would restart so McCully is covering for Key and a move against McCully would mean McCully would reveal this.

    • Good wrap Martyn,

Steve is way off base, must be a foreigner as he wouldn’t say that if he knew what these two have been up to.

Yes selling our future by giving Saudi’s free sheep farms on our money is simply ludicrous as it is using our money to set up some foreigner to go into competition against us in NZ??????

      • Hey consider this Martyn,

Since you commented on the “Nation” program this weekend as a GOOD PIECE OF INVESTIGATIVE JOURALISM’

HER IS MY INTERPRETATION OF THE PROGRAM AND WHYN IT HAS PICKED UP IT’S GAME?

NATION WAS another Magical expose’ of National’s spin and diversion of the truth by selective cherry picking” to show reasons for everything that falsely state the why/where/how metred out to benefit the National Party policies at their expense of telling the truth to the public.

The MSM is our last opportunity to tell the truth, but will they finally step up as the “Nation” seems to have and now act responsibly to tell the honest truth as to the real facts surrounding this Saudi sheep deal public issue as just one of many.

I hope the MSM finally help the public to know the real facts.

As to your praise Martyn for Patrick Gower and the team investigation of the PM and the Saudi sheep deal.

TRUE IT WAS A STARK CHANGE BY NATION.
It was an important change from the usual hollowed out “Nation” programming and showed some serious investigative Journalism integrity finally.
        MY CONCERNS.
I am concerned that this comes hard on the heels of rumours of a proposal for Media works and a merging with publically funded TV1 as there I see a possible reason for this change of heart for media work’s to come out with some sweeteners for public consumption of some “real hard hitting investigative programming to quell the worries for us about if the marriage of Media works and TV 1 do combine, that we will view the media works as becoming a REAL journalistic media?

JUST MY THOUGHTS HERE TO CONSIDER.

  6. This would be hilarious if you could take the direness out of N.Z’s situation.
It is my belief that Key , English et al are trying to lose the next election. They are out of the ideas that they never had.
It is hilarious because Key and his sycophants have done such a good job brainwashing the electorate, the electorate now, in turn, won’t let them fail at the polls ,regardless of how bad they are.
    Key continually talking gibberish,
English can’t add up or remember anything ,
Brownlee looks out on his feet . Joyce who? Where’s he been lately? Bennett lying her head off then giggling like a 13 year old schoolgirl .
Bridges allowing the use of faulty steel to build our highways and tunnels.
They are a mess . A useless incompetent mess!
And now they will probably have to wallow in their big fat mess.
Oh the irony , but absolutely tragic for N.Z.

  7. So clearly, Murray is also a sociopath with no empathy for anyone else. Funny how The Natzi Party seems to attract these kinds of assholes. Perhaps they could rename themselves The Natzi Sociopath Party so everyone is 100% clear on what King John and his Cronies truly represent — an economic utopia for the privileged few.

    • Having just watched the Nation I concur re your arsehole statements. Michele Boag is bent as a banana, McCully is on the end of that banana. Key telling Gower that Gower doesn’t understand the housing unitary plan but at least Gower told Key that Key didn’t understand his question!

I liken ordinary kiwi’s treatment under National to the sheep in Saudi Arabia. Under National and Key we are like lams to the slaughter.

To have a pro National man in Hooten state that something is seriously wrong here raises concerns of corruption.
I just hope the Auditor Generals inquiry hasn’t been directed to by Key?

  8. How long will it take for ordinary people to recognise that governments do not represent their interests and that most MPs are self-serving liars and/or idiots, kept in positions of power because they promote the agendas of banks, corporations and speculators?

Isn’t 40 years of dismal failure on behalf of governments enough?

Obviously not. We will have to endure yet more total failure and ever-greater impoverishment because people keep voting for blatant liars, idiots and political parties that do not represent their best interests.

    It’s all very depressing.

  9. Astoundingly and probably in her case to be expected Audrey Young rated McCully an 8 out of 10, no not for corruption but because “a demanding minister, seven years in the portfolio means he knows what he wants”. Dear God, everything that goes on with this guy be it Saudi bribes that had ethical foreign diplomats wondering out loud how he was still in a job or his largesse with tax payer money with the purchase of Shane Jones, as a stunt to get back at Labour and everything in between screams out what a terrible advertisement he is for NZ.

Having said that Young rated Key a 9 out of 10, not for his trademark unbelievability that permeates his entire government on all levels or for having a thus far incomparable smear machine if epic dishonest proportions running out of his office but for his “remarkable performance” and leading a “popular, diciplined and active government through a third term putting him in an elite class of leader…”.

And with these fantasy centre folds of her world there is not a mention of all the lying, the stat rigging, the record debt, the homelessness created by these super hero’s nope but we the public get Audrey’s worthless opinion and therefore that of the bloody hopeless NZ Herald that is so very out of touch and very warped anyway !

    • Clearly Young, O’Sullivan, Hide and the likes have the same ideals as Key and co. That is, no social conscience and not a empathetic bone in their bodies. In saying that, they are clueless, plenty of “real time” issues to write about but offer nothing credible. The snake oiled salesman has done a great job on them and they are just sheep, follow thy leader!

    • God that Audrey Young would make a great laxative.
Just reading that run down XRay has given me the shits

    • Audrey Young has erected a shrine to Key in her hot water cupboard. She goes home every night, dons her ceremonial robes, and pays homage to the New Messiah.

But seriously, if she was any more of a sycophant, she’d purchase an investment property in Key’s underpants.

  10. If McCully is the dark Prince, Boag must be the black queen and one can only wonder about other possible dirty goings on that we never hear about which Her Grubbiness may be involved in.
Interesting to see Hooten giving his 2 cents worth – he and Boag make great PR rivals.

And now that even the Saudi businessman at the centre of all of this has denied ever threatening to sue our government we will see fork-tongued Key twist and turn and slime his way around our feeble media.

    • Why is the ex-President of the National Party going to Saudi Arabia and somehow “met and knows the Saudi businessman personally”.

      WTF?

  11. Anyone else notice how theatrically pained she looks and how increasingly hysterical she sounds when Michelle Boag feels the heat turned up?
Methinks the woman doth protest far too much.
    What is she hiding?
