No matter where Labour put David Cunliffe – he continues to shine

David Cunliffe stress 5

David Cunliffe has shone a light on the appalling laxness of the OIO and their rubber stamping of selling land to anyone, even river polluters…

More pressure is being put on the Overseas Investment Office (OIO) with the Labour Party saying it has evidence other foreign companies should have failed the good character test.

The OIO had to apologise for failing to conduct a robust inquiry when it approved the sale of Onetai Station in Taranaki to two Argentine brothers.

Rafael and Federico Grozovsky – who bought Onetai Station in 2014 – had been found criminally responsible for chemical dumping from their tannery near Buenos Aires.

…wouldn’t illegal dumping of chemicals into a river suggest those investors are not really who we want in NZ? The Government are so focused on flogging NZ off to anyone with a buck, they don’t give a damn about who they sell to.

At some point NZers have to start questioning their support of a Government who know the price of everything and the value of nothing.

  1. Good point Martyn,

David presents well and needed more professional support from his Party in the past when he was left lacking some details about Capitol gains so he has a future alright.

  2. Yep David Cunliffe shines alright, and notice he is no longer being attacked and crucified by key’s msm. Looks like it was a good plan to put him out of firing line so he can do his job.

    • Now look… I agree with both CLEANGREEN and you Words…

I don’t think we can ever forget that electrifying speech Cunliffe gave of his vision on a new New Zealand. For a time, … we had a glimpse of what NZ once was and could be again.

Yet… like the Praetorian guard with Julius Caesar… the neo liberal caucus of the Labour party stabbed him in the back.

Moa’s… we had a prominent senior Labour MP talking of moa’s. At a critical launching of both Cunliffe and the Labour party election campaign. The idiot spoke of moa’s…a small one they could pet . I will never forget that treachery. And neither will those who placed their faith in a redemptive new leader and reformist of the Labour party , David Cunliffe.

And the symbolism of an extinct moa – that of mocking the previous Social Democracy and its Keynesian economic model in favor of the neo liberal charter was not lost on the general public , by the way…

We had one of the biggest collective media gang up’s on Cunliffe in recent NZ political history ( recall the deliberately out – of – context corruption of Cunliffe’s speech to a women’s refuge ) – save for the gang up on Mana’s Hone Harawira ( which was totally odious – and I shall expect better from you in future , Mr Peters as well… as a ‘friendly’ piece of advice…) with the sound backing of Labours sold out neo liberal caucus .

Andrew Little is the perennial ‘ seems like he has potential’ kind of leader… but in reality he plays it safe. And that playing it safe has garnered him some success in unification of the Labour party… but at a huge price. He is still seen as lacklustre and as ‘ steady as she goes’ when he really needs to be seen to have the heart of the revolutionary strong man. He’s ok… but there is still far too much reticence to ‘ rock the neo liberal boat’. This will not win him the next election unfortunately.

Think back to the days of Norman Kirk for a minute… he was… a quiet yet steeled leader… intelligent , and perceptive yet without histrionics… and he delivered and was a popular leader. But he was no self acclaimed academic either… in fact he was firmly grounded in social democracy and a Keynesian economic model… with ethics and values born of the NZ psyche of a fair go for all people…regardless of background.

In fact , such was his belief ( and to be fair , later on Rob Muldoon of the National party ) in social democracy and Keynesianism that when Roger Douglas …. a junior member of Labour suggested implementation of free market principles … Kirk rounded on him and said ” If you ever mention this again I will expel you from this party”.

Now… imagine David Cunliffe with full support of his caucus / his ‘Cabinet’ if you will. If Cunliffe…was allowed to reform slowly but surely by increments the destructive neo liberal charter of the last 3 decades… to undo so much of the un- equitable and socially divisive policy’s of neo liberalism…

Would it not beg the question that in order to do that there would necessarily need to be a ‘purge’ … or for those with fainter hearts… a realignment and re-selection of those who were in line with these bold new initiatives?

And yet we have David Cunliffe now..relegated to the back benches…yet still demonstrating his political potency and capacity for leadership , his humility as a team player in accepting a lesser role ( for now , at least ) and strong sense of ethics and standards in calling this current corrupt govt and its edifices to account…

I would say … that in future David Cunliffe needs to be reinstated to the front benches , in which case , he would be among the most powerful opponents of National as well as a strident opponent of rampant neo liberalism. And if that means he resumes leadership,….. it then becomes a matter of may the best contender win.

And if that means others may have to practice the same sort of humility yet team espirit de corp as Cunliffe is demonstrating now… so be it.

      • Agreed Wild K. But one minor point – Brutus, Cassius, etc were not in the Praetorian Guard. Maybe you mean Caligula?

But Caligula does not make such an apt comparison…

  3. Martyn’s point indicates well why David Cunliffe is not only feared by the FJK mob, but also his own party’s neo libs. He is intelligent, consistent, articulate and knows his stuff well. Hence he is a threat to Labour’s Rogergnomes as well as NatzKEY.

It’s a pity msm at the behest of FJK, destroyed any chance Cunliffe had of leading NZ. It would have been a much fairer and better place for his leadership. Our loss.

  4. Its never too late for a comeback.
He has learnt a lot scince 2014 and although unsuccessful last time he may very well be called on again too lead with goodwill and support and a new policy direction and focus giving us a genuine choice to the mess we have now.

  5. Let him organise a revolt and replace little, then lets see (again) how much the nz voters want/like him! You can play fantasy politics by dreaming that it was MSM that failed cunliffe, you guys really don’t have your fingers on the pulse of nz politics/voters…just the fringe of far left politics only.

    • Why should you care? You’re hardly a Labour voter, Imright.

However, the fact you’re taking time to vent your spleen on the issue indicates to me you find the prospect of a Cunliffe-led, resurgent Labour Party to be threatening to you. I find that reassuring.

  6. Yes Cunliffe shines. I remember when Shearer demoted him and he got fisheries and he made much with that shadow portfolio.

He is bright articulate and left. Saw him on the Daily blog and praising Labour’s future of work, so loyalty too.

Best PM we never had. If he made a come back, that would be great.

  7. David Cunliffe is a special presenter of a case and strong.

So I am passing this case onto him to follow up for THE GOOD OF NZ DEMOCRACY.

For a year we have been investigating how our NZ General Election process operates, and we have unearthed some very deep disturbing bad issues that must be challenged now before the next election comes around, or we will again loose to National no matter what we do.

    Let me explain here now.

David do you remember on the night of the election all the pundits and straw polls (early) had a labour lead victory almost in the bag?

For the first half of Election night through the election vote counting labour, greens, NZ First, were all coming up with strong numbers?

Then at the half way, the worm began to level out and all the way to the end of the night the National party were leaping ahead to a clear win single handed, while the rest were stationary?

The pundits said they had never seen such a wild swing at that time of an election?

Well it was the classic signs of a “Vote flip” that would have occurred all the experts we have studied in documents say would have occurred if the votes swung more than 5 to 10% AND THAT NIGHT THE VOTES DID JUST THAT AND MORE.

Now in most countries there is a system legislated to make sure the voting system is set up to allow what is called ” the voter verification paper audit trail (VVPAT)”, which is one of the four minimum security requirements mandated by law in most countries.

This verification is the way to truly check to see if the votes were actually flipped by simply verifying if all the “Preferred voters interpreted results aligned by a check using the Verification system if they had that system in the voting program and for we as voters can check if our own “Preferable vote” was actually “interpreted by the voting system” as in many such programs used abroad but NZ Election does not have the voter verification system to check accuracy after a vote flip occurred.

We have a human right to be allowed to check if the Election Commission had our vote registered in the voting system correctly, and if not it is a violation of our basic human rights, or they could put us down as anything and we would never know right?

Now the sad fact is we today have been advised that NZ does not legislatively allow such a voter verification paper audit trail (VVPAT), one of the four minimum security requirements mandated by law, overseas.

Canada uses it Britain USA and may other also but not here in little old corrupt NZ, so we have been set up David right here to have our next election stolen as the last one was under your leadership of labour.

Dear David & Opposition Party Members. IMPORTANT URGENT NZ ELECTION COMMISSION FLAWED PROCESS. NO VOTER VERIFICATION AUDIT TRAIL (VVPAT), one of the four minimum security requirements mandated by law, overseas. CURRENTLY NOT IN NZ.

    REQUIREMENT FOR ACTION – 5th May 2016.

Our voting system has no verified voting system as many other countries have so a rigged election can not be rechecked for corruption here in NZ, meaning national could again rig the next election keeping them in power.

Our right to a free fair election next year depends on Opposition forcing voter’s right to hold a free fair election process which we will have the ability to verify our vote was correctly interpreted so no vote fraud will occur to be traced. Many Counties are using it now but NZ has “No Legislative Requirements” the IT Manager from (Catalyst voting”) for NZ Elections Commission said to me today in the following email for your evidence.

Please fix our rigged elections and we will have a true fair proper election inn 2017 & Protect our Democracy David please.

  8. Some of us are destined never to be leaders and are actually more effective if we are not, maybe David Cunliffe is one of us, you could even argue that people like that, unburdened with the burdens of leadership can be MORE effective. Would he be able to have the freedom what he does well if he were still leader?

  9. If NZ wont use safe voter checking during our Ggeneral Elections and most other countries including our trading partners including is seen here to have embraced our new verifiable systems then we should protect their interests here in NZ by using the VVPAT verifiable Voting Paper Audit trail systems too?
Otherwise we are again seen as lacking in our security of our systems as government are right now pouring $125 million into our Cyber crime system but nothing to protect corrupt Political elections????

Chronology of events leading to the use of VVPAT Verifiable Voting Paper Audit trail.

    http://www.pib.nic.in/newsite/efeatures.aspx?relid=104462

v In All Party Meeting held on 4th October 2010, there was a broad consensus among Political Parties about the continued use of Electronic Voting Machines and several Political Parties suggested that the possibility of incorporating a “Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail” should be explored.

v The Election Commission referred the matter to the Expert Committee to examine the possibility of a paper trail and also directed the manufacturers i.e. Bharat Electronics Limited, Bangalore (BEL) and Electronics Corporation of India Limited, Hyderabad (ECIL) to develop a prototype of VVPAT system.

v On the recommendation of Technical Experts Committee, a field trail was conducted in Thiruvananthapuram, Delhi, Jaisalmer, Cherapunjee and Leh in the month of July 2011 in the presence and participation of all stakeholders including general voters, national and state political parties, civil society organizations and media.

v After incorporation of the changes recommended after the first field trial , a second field trial of prototype VVPAT system was held in Delhi, Thiruvananthapuram, Leh, Jaisalmer and Cherapunjee in July-August, 2012. The Technical Expert Committee approved the final design of the VVPAT units in its meeting held on 19th February, 2013.

v The Government of India, vide their notification, dated 14th august 2013, has amended the Conduct of Election Rules, 1961, enabling the Commission to use VVPAT with electronic voting machines..

v For the first time Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) with Electronic Voting Machines was used for the Noksen Assembly seat in Tuensang district of Nagaland in September, 2013.

v In a ruling in October 2013, the Supreme Court (SC), in the case of Subramanian Swamy vs Election Commission of India (ECI), has held that VVPAT (Vote Verifiable Paper Audit Trial) is “indispensable for free and fair elections” and thus, directed the ECI to equip Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) with VVPAT systems to “ensure accuracy of the VVPAT system”.

v The Supreme Court directed the Election Commission to introduce a paper trail in EVMs, in a phased manner, for the next general elections in 2014, saying it will ensure free and fair polls. The apex court also directed the Centre to provide financial assistance for introducing Vote Verifier Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) system.

v In pursuance of the Supreme Court order, the Election Commission ordered VVPAT systems to be used in the New Delhi assembly for the upcoming assembly elections. The pilot project was launched across 186 polling stations that will cater to 1,18,596 registered voters.

v The Election Commission also instructed the Mizoram election department to use Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail System (VVPAT) system in 10 Assembly constituencies during recently held elections to the 40-member state legislature. VVPAT was also introduced in one constituency each in Delhi (as mentioned above), Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan.

The Commission will need about 14 lakh VVPAT machines to introduce the system in all 543 Lok Sabha constituencies during forthcoming Lok Sabha elections . However, the Commission is apprehensive that so many machines can be produced and testing them in such a short duration of time. The Commission feels that covering all Parliamentary constituencies may not be possible before 2019 General Elections. The Commission has stated that approximately 1500 crore Rupees would be required for procuring VVPAT and installing it at all polling booths across the country .
