Here we go…

Analysis of media images shows bias towards Key in last election
Sixty percent of those were of the two major party leaders – John Key, the National Party leader, and Labour’s then leader David Cunliffe.
Images of the Prime Minister outnumbered those of Mr Cunliffe by three-to-one.
New Zealand First leader Winston Peters was the third most photographed leader, and Colin Craig of the Conservative Party the fourth.
Massey University Professor Claire Robinson’s research looked at more than 1400 pictures published in newspapers during 2014.

…now here’s the hilarious bit…

She told the Sunday Morning programme the newspapers were showing a structural bias, rather than a political bias.

…r-i-g-h-t. It’s not because corporate media are de facto members of Key’s Caucus, oh no – the bias is simply ‘structural’ rather than ‘political’.

R-i-g-h-t.

Just like how when the NZ Police admitted they have a bias against Maori last year, it wasn’t racist it was an ‘unconscious bias‘. Just like how when the SIS and GCSB were caught making racist and sexist jokes it wasn’t racism or sexism – oh no – it was another ‘unconscious’ bias. And when the Secret Intelligence Service of NZ colluded with the PMs Office to falsify and smear Phil Goff in the lead up to the 2011 election,  that wasn’t ‘political’ either, just a misjudgment.

Isn’t it extraordinary that even when the evidence of corporate media bias, racism in the Police force, sexism and racism in the SIS and GCSB and an outrageous abuse of political power by smearing the leader of the opposition using the state spy apparatus – none of this is actual bias, oh no, it’s just unconscious or error of judgement.

This tripe can’t be tolerated any longer. A new current affairs show starts next week.

  1. Excellent compilation of facts there Martyn, this should resonate amongst the MSM as their over indulgence in Politicians while forgetting the tenants of journalistic integrity of neutral reporting using all opposing views and not just “guilding the lily” with their own fabricated views as the natZ do constantly.

We cant wait for the current affairs show to bring back balanced unbiased views for our minds to ponder as we prepare for the next election to throw out these corrupt government partners and purge the rotten spin doctors and their trolls.

    • Totally agree Cleangreen, we stopped the NZ Herald 2 years ago, the Listener is now only purchased with fly buys for the TV timetable and that is hardly watched these days either. The Listener now is just a life style magazine and Jane Clifton’s column has gone off the boil – dumbed down is the word for it. The Herald was a disgrace, cannot believe how down hill it went. I honestly don’t know how anybody reads it these days. I visit a lovely 96 year lady who was hating the trashy news that was on, she had no idea how to change the remote and since we have got her on to Aljazeera and Campbell on at 5pm she is over the moon. So I think it is pretty wide spread the distaste for the bias and just unmitigated rubbish that is published in newsprint or produced on TV, the columnists/people who front these shows are
      terrible.

Like you I will be watching Martyn’s new show at 7.01pm.

      • The NZ Herald bias list:

        Fran O’Sullivan
        Claire Tevett
        Mike Hosking
        Rodney Hide
        Audrey Young
        John Roughan

If you put enough crap in the NZ Herald the sheeple will believe it!
The worst I’ve seen, is when the camera’s on T.V 3 cut across live to early and Key had his arm around Audrey Young’s shoulder and she was glowing!

      • John Roughan
        Audrey Young
        Fran O’Sullivan
        Rodney Hide
        Mike Hosking
NZ Herald columnists, bought to you by the National Party.
        “Bought” being the operative word!

  2. This on The Standard regarding the Robinson report :

[ ‘As noted by Robinson’s earlier release there is an obligation for the print media to exhibit balance. The New Zealand Press Council’s statement of principles states this:

‘An independent press plays a vital role in a democracy. The proper fulfilment of that role requires a fundamental responsibility to maintain high standards of accuracy, fairness and balance and public faith in those standards ‘.

[ ‘The elevation of Mike Hosking and Paul Henry to positions of authority the year before the 2014 election clearly helped the Government. Add to this National’s huge financial resources and evidence of media bias and it is no wonder that Labour and the Greens struggled.’]

    ………………………………………………………………………………………..

  3. Martyn that pretty much sums up the right wing takeover that had intensified scince 2008 brainwashing everyone who is involved in the serious job of reporting the news to the public.
This bias in favour of the right in NZ began under the last Labour govt when that govt was returned with 43% of the vote and the Sunday star times front page headline read NZ SWINGS RIGHT because Dunne and Peters picked up a decimated Nat vote.
No credit to Labour for a massive endorsmemt from the electorate
The Herald editorals got nastier and
Holmes berated Clark for calling an early election but when Key went early last time because the timetable interfered with a meeting not one criticism reported
Only negative reporting of the Labour party makes it to the front page in most newspapers where Key is concerned bad news is reported on page 21 to 25
The right has taken over without one bullet being fired and most kiwis are
unaware that their democracy has been seriously weakened due to foreign interests and patronage and massive money contributions to the National party and their friends

    • The other point I would like to make is the appalling contridiction surrounding Shane Taurima and his connection to the Labour party while
      working for TVNZ
I thought he was firm but fair in his inteterviews with the right and left in fact he was impartial unlike many of the other so called celebrity journalist’s we have
He was removed for being left wing
Yet Henery Hosking Holmes Garner Plunket and Gower are and
in Holmes case were allowed to push their right wing views and opinions and nasty interview techniques with full authority of the networks in this country
The appalling treatment of David Cunliffe by Gower over the Wah Lu affair when Gower called HIM a liar on national tv
Key was never treated in this way even when Dirty Politics exsposed his dirty tricks and lies and cover ups
Its rotten and it stinks !!!!!!

  4. Why did Massey University’s Professor Claire Robinson bother when she wasn’t going to tell the truth?

Of course it’s political bias, that’s what it is and nothing else.

Was there a fear of funding cuts if the truth was told? Or the opposite, to tell lies? It would have been better for Professor Claire Robinson to have said nothing, rather than making herself and Massey University look like lying, disingenuous unprofessional suck ups for the Key government.

  5. Oooooo…. every time I type my thumb hits the comment box and my comments are deleted…never mind… I love repeating myself…

Look, diddly diddly …we can now all run along and feel so wonderfully structural …

Structural… I would of thought it was fine in the context of fabricating a building , but …Oh wait !!!! … hang on …what a bout a political house of cards ???!!! Like National !!!!

    That’s structural !!!!

Gosh … except now we see that a political bias isn’t a political bias but a STRUCTURAL one.

And a political party isn’t really a political party at all but a STRUCTURAL one !!!!

Oh I feel so wonderfully structural now!!!

So here’s to you Mrs Robinson , heaven holds a place for those who pray…hey hey hey !!!

Aren’t we all feeling so jilly jolly structural today ??? …I know I am.

    • Yes Wild Katipo, my comment disappears also and has since Martyn had the run in with the police over the comments posted by John Minto over the Talley’s zero ours issues.

I guess it is some security checks we outspoken folks undergo and the comments usually surface later.

If Martyn needs to do this I’m comfortable with it.

  6. The people in news organisations used to pride themselves on their objectivity, political neutrality and attention to detail.
Now 40 years later they pride themselves on their adherence to political right ideology and subservience to the National Party.
    Some progress.

  7. ‘Structural’ as in ‘you will be able to go to any media source and see the bias repeated.
So lets go to the Daily Blog and The Standard and see if they show more pictures of John Key than they do of other politicians?

    Gee. They do!

    • Nothing like a good dose of structural , eh?…

I reckon David Cunliffe could teach us a thing or two about the media and being ‘ structural’ ….

Come to think…so too could Hone Hawira and all the politicians who had a beat up on him and the IMP….

And Kim Dotcom , and Nicky Hager , hell !!! , … we’ve got so many people wandering around beside Dr Robinson who could tell us all a whole bunch about things being ‘structural’ kicking around NZ at the moment these days …

I wonder why that is?….. hmmmm…… I think Dr Robinson said recently something about the media being structural…I wonder if that was it…?

  8. It would be interesting to see a comparison to circa 2008 and 2005 when the Labour party was in government for a more honest comparison.
There is an advantage of incumbency.

Maybe the visage of the Internet party leader should have the same airtime as the prime minister in your eyes. But wait, we had seen enough of Kim Dotcom. No lack in profile there for 1% of the vote.

    • ELECTION coverage of Kim.Com was negative in the extreme.
While some of it was down too poor management the media made him public enemy no 1 very early on.
Key and Joyce were not going to allow him to bankroll his way through the campaign. only the National party and its secret donors are permitted to do that in this country.
The media and Cameton Slater did the dirty work for them destroying him as only they can.
      Perception is everything.
