Folks, our boycott is working…

TV3 ratings slide: ‘These are challenging times’
TV3 news and current affairs director Mark Jennings is putting a brave face on a ratings slide for 3 News against One News, saying “these are challenging times for us”.

Nielsen TAM ratings show a big slide since January last year, when the two news shows were nearly level-pegging. Today, TVNZ says the gap between them is the widest it has been for 10 years.

On Tuesday, One News attracted 42.1 per cent of the 25-54-year-old audience and 3 News had 14.8 per cent, says TVNZ.

…if TV3 want the boycott ended, all they need to do is bring Campbell Live back.

It’s real simple. Campbell Live was killed off for political reasons by the CEO and we don’t give you our eyeballs if you don’t give us back Campbell Live!

The 5th estate has an obligation and responsibility to overthrow the 4th estate for dereliction of duty.

And that’s what we are doing.

Join the boycott here.

TDB Recommends NewzEngine.com

This team deserved better than the way they were treated and we should fight for Campbell Live the way they fought for us over 10 years.

So say all of us.

  1. Seems TV3’s ratings are going down the toilet! Great stuff 🙂

Thanks Martyn for keeping this out in the open. Let’s rub salt into MediaWorks/TV3’s festering rating wounds 🙂

BRING BACK CAMPBELL LIVE, the very best in media there is.

  2. Beyond the boycott and the non-Campbell revenge, we’ve stopped watching TV3 news (and almost all programs) due to the increasingly vile method of ‘news creation’ – case in point, Paddy Gower and Andrew Little interview, the Phil Rudd non-news wind-up.
Really, is this the best your newsroom can come up with? Shame on you TV3!
Once 7 Days is finished, we will have no affiliation.

And for the record, our family have been staunch TV3 supporters since Day 1.
    Disappointed.

  3. I feel like I’m more 13th estate than 5th, but right on!

And how can TV3’s CEO warrant the mega-salary package now?

    Bite me!

  4. We used to watch TV3 news because it led to Campbell Live. We watched Campbell Live because they did so much for those less fortunate in our society. We now watch TV1 but don’t have the same wish to watch Seven Sharpe, mainly because of Mike Hoskings being a vocal climate change denier – but it is ironic that Seven Sharpe, in his absence, have raised the topic of lunches in schools – not rocket science.

  5. Appoint another CEO, John, and set in place again the requested programme before it’s too late for both of you.

  6. I admit to being a close mainstream media observer, and I do regularly tune into radio stations that claim to be the leaders, and also some other ones. I do the same with television, and go through the channels, I note changes and trends, and it tells me a lot. Naturally I do the same with print and the online version of that latter part of the media, maybe not quite as intensely as the broadcasting part, but I feel I have a rather good and reliable cross section sample to make judgment calls on.

Paul Bloody Henry, that over active, loud mouthed front man for Radio Live and Mediaworks (for some) TV3 goes on about his sponsors, and most of the “news” they present for breakfast are a mixture of the very few real news items, and more so trivia kind of “news”, they also have placed too much focus on what they call “social media”, with a person employed just for delivering such “feedback”. Of an hours program at least 25 to 30 percent is advertising and self promotion of the two broadcast stations cooperating, then there is another third about endless gossip, silly jokes and other trivia and socialite news, and the rest is somewhere between what we would traditionally consider as being “real news”, and the rest is infotainment. It is largely a silly infotainment forum, nothing else, with nine out of ten, celebrity and gossip panels and little of substance.

This may appeal to some, it will not appeal to many.

Since they got rid of John Campbell, there has been a big void, and it is not being filled. The news look dry and boring, apart from Gower and Sabin and O’Brien who are trying to spin stories and headlines out of often made up or exaggerated stuff. This does not convince serious news consumers, nor those who would rather simply prefer entertainment or infotainment anyway. They are losing credit.

As for the rest, it is lots of shows of the usual fare, to keep the shallow minded and bored glued to screens with special effects and dumbing down. The only program still worth watching at times is The Nation or the current affairs show before then, on Sundays.

TV One is only a little better, at least they try to be a bit more balanced and objective re news, but they often fall into the same trap as Mediaworks (for some), to whip up stories and focus on sound bites rather than substance. Their Q+A team is certainly not up to standard I fear, and they look like headless chickens at times.

I stay well clear of Prime and Sky News, as they are just so dry or superficial, it is not even worth calling that “news”.

Maori TV has dropped in quality, I note, as it is now more boring, that is most the times, as before it delivered at least some good, interesting, revealing reports on Native Affairs and so. It has become more mainstream.

The print media is now the worst it has ever been in this country, being more of the UK type media, that is in its early attempts, to follow glamour, big headline stories, sensationalism and scandal, and poor reporting.

I could go on about some other print and online media, but the worry I have with the blogs is, that most feed off media reports, off the mainstream media reporting, because blogs have not the resources and expert manpower to compete with the MSM yet.

There are though great stories, info and revelations found on various blogs, and that is encouraging. We need to develop blogs like this further, so that credibility becomes more widely accepted. That requires posters and commenters to make good efforts to write and deliver good stories and information, that will set the agenda for the MSM to take note of.

The PM hair pulling story was just one example how that can be done, there are others, and Nicky Hager should be invited to participate more, same as some other independent journalists. It is a challenging and promising environment, the variety of blogs, and I wish TDB well, to get more traction and readership, as that is what the future demands of us.

As for the MSM, despite of lowered quality standards, I still prefer Radio NZ National, although it is at times boring, it is simply the only advertisement free station and source, and at least at times a good source of reliable info.

  7. Mediajerks doesn’t deserve Campbell. Leave them the likes of Paul Henry. Get Campbell as a beacon on tv2, that desolate wasteland of detritus, and give me a reason to watch that channel again.

  8. Since we lost Campbell live I have never watched TV3 at all.

I seldom did glance, only for a moment as I rolled over the channels, and it seems always to be playing advertisements.

Or some screaming Gorky guy imitating a laughing hyena apparently called Paul Henry.

This sight turned my stomach I had to rush to a far away channel to save my sanity, to a channel like RT or Aljazeera, or at least a light right wing changing BBC.

  9. Haven’t missed TV 3 at all. If Campbell came back we would watch again but not anymore. Boring TV on most channels except the Arts Channel; Rialto and RT.COM and occasionally the Comedy Channel and History Channel. TV 3 and TV 1 are just poor class, low grade and lacking in substance propaganda machines and mouth pieces for greedy multi national corporations and the lame and lying govt.
Biased journalism and it’s boring boring BORING.

  10. Yes I have to agree – Boring! At least with Helen in charge, she liked the arts, so encouraged a bit of…what’s the word…. Life? Imagination? creativity? ….something other than Dull old men chasing more and more money…it is getting so sad here in NZ… What happened to our pride, our vibrancy, our no.8 wire, think outside the square mentality?
    Quashed that’s what.

    • Never a truer word spoken Kim Dandy.

This arrogant Government has quashed most spirits here in our land, by the awful repeated word of control called “Compliance” the global strategists favourite term used everywhere in “authority now.

We are told not to think, they term as “dumbed down” we truly are now a supressed people today.

I will never be silenced or life is worthless living.

“The price of democracy & freedom is consent vigilance.”

  11. We are increasing our advertising budget with Mediaworks in recognition of the stand they took ridding the airwaves of the filthy socialist Campbell. Your followers are losers, leeching livings from taxpayers, so their support would be as worthy as yours . . . zilch!

    • A good piss take ! —– I agree Frank – that’s for sure !

Invest more “MoreTense” into your sinking ship (Chan. 3) and the rest of us will encourage DIVESTING in greedy and unethical corporations like Mediaworks etc.
Did we hit a greedy little corporate nerve in the sinking boat called lame lying Nats – the “out of touch” government?
Who are the real losers here? The “filthy leeches” are those running our country now and what a shame it is and a horrible job they are doing.
Yes ! bring back “Campbell Live” so we can expose the rotten leeches ; liars and dirty politics.

  12. I may watch a very small portion of the TV3 news at 6.00pm but once the time hits 7.00pm I switch to another channel. In the mornings I watch about 45 minutes of the Paul Henry Show. But every time(and especially Monday mornings for some crazy reason)John Key appears I switch off the sound or go to the toilet. After so much time I still get the impression that Christie,Jennings and Walden were so hasty to obey their Dear Leader John Key that they failed to listen to viewers. The appearance of John Key every Monday morning on the Paul Henry Show/John Key Mutual Admiration Society is too much.
John Key may stupidly consider himself popular but he is an idiot and a waste of TV time. He(Key)thinks his comments on TV and in the media sound oh so wise when in fact he couldn’t talk his way out of a paper bag.
Bring back Campbell Live TV3 and show you are stronger than an insecure, manipulative and self-obsessed American called John Key

    • I cannot understand why anyone would watch Paul Henry ever and especially the new ‘giggle’ show in the morning. This programme has had an unbelievable amount of promotion. I am a devoted National Radio fan, we have it on for morning report which is generally pretty good and I think the two presenters on now are streets ahead of Jeff and the other bod who never took any minister to task.

  13. I want John Campbell on our State Owned television channel! Give him a prime slot on TV1. Advertising free.

I would like to see Mihingarangi Forbes as co-host, maybe RNZ would be happy to allow her time to work in this capacity as well. It is fantastic to have her on RNZ!

I think we need to reclaim our television assets. Have at least TV1 advertising free, as a public broadcast television station.

Send Hoskins to TV3, if they want it to be the National Party front, so be it. Let it be dumbed down to the levels National Party supporters can cope with. Let private enterprise do what it does best.

We on the other hand could have an intelligent media, via State Funded Broadcasting.

  14. Thanks to the net, there are so many other sources of televisual news, current affairs, and analysis. Some of them are even entertaining while still being informative; EngageMedia.org, Democracy Now, the Trews, the Young Turks, TED Talks, random stuff on Vimeo and YouTube (watched a thought piece by Slavoj Zizek on the BigThink channel today). Obviously you have to put it all through your own bullshit filter, but that’s just as true of TV, but unlike TV, you can not only change the channel but choose what’s playing at any given time.
