Although I take umbrage at the statement of Karl Marx when he wrote ‘ religion is the opiate of the masses’… He was right in sentiment …in this country’s case…it is ‘ rugby and sports are the opiates of the masses’… The Romans had their version in distracting the public when the ‘ barbarians’ threatened their borders – back then it was ‘ bread and circuses’.
