We are used to NZ Pork lying about the welfare of their pig farms, we are used to NZ Pork trying to deceive punters with ‘Pig Care’ stickers that mean nothing, but the mind boggling sexism of their latest advert is just so jaw dropping it is difficult to comprehend anyone thought it was acceptable…

‘Sexist’ NZ Pork advert tells women it’s time to get out of the kitchen
A new advertisement for NZ Pork has been slammed as sexist, misogynistic and embarrassing.

The campaign urges men to “give your wife a night of unforgettable pleasure!” by cooking something from their recipe hub, which includes “Your Big Pork Balls”.

Recipe difficulty is measured on a scale from “burping after a beer” to “remembering your missus’ birthday”.

NZ Pork have managed to make the phrase ‘sexist pig’ even uglier. What the hell were they thinking?

Talking of sexist advertising – what about this?

50 Shades of burgundy?

Are we going backwards in terms of sexism in advertising?

  1. Appealing to bigoted blokes seems to be all the rage, these days.

I guess they reckon if the political leaders of the country can do it, then they can too.

It is becoming all rather ‘lowest-common-denominator’ stuff.

We must have so many active bigots in this country.

    Pretty sad.

    • The appeal to blokes is an offshoot of the trend in advertising, started a long time ago now, of appealing to nostalgia amongst New Zealanders for the “good old days”, hence all the kiwiana we are plagued with, primarily targeted at babyboomers but also including Generation Xers, particularly amongst males. The current enthusiasm for going to the coast and getting some “kai” is one example of this.

    • The ad appears to imply that a girl going to a co-ed school and being surrounded by males is going to be harmed in some way. It’s an utterly appalling ad.

    • Nah – just a stupid ad that is meant to remind you about the importance of a will. I assume the parent wanted her child to go to a single sex school, then died, then their wishes were not honoured?

It’s not very effective advertising when it needs explaining does it 🙂

  2. Lets spare a thought for SIR ! roger douglas . Architect of Neo Liberal New Zealand . The Grand Daddy . The Big Man . The Powerful Mr Huge . Big Chief Mc Big .

The short arsed little fucker . Pig farmer . Pork Board Boar . Sociopath .

  3. The pork ad was a classical marketing trap – they made ads targeting the pork producers who were paying for them instead of the supposed market. The joke is on the marketers and the customer they caricatured so aptly.

  4. Good piece of light entertainment thanks Martyn.

Ha ha just after they suggested we put some humour into our blogs, but the irony is that Mike King’s expose’ of the cage breeding of these much misaligned fellow creatures showed such cruelty to this species, it was probably predictable that the Pork board/producers needed to feel that some “kiwiana” was injected into the subject.

I don’t eat pork as I raise some small number of sheep, another misaligned species also I might add.

    • I don’t eat pork as the thought of eating the stuff raised in factory farms makes me want to throw up and I can’t afford the free range stuff very often, so I have actually lost the taste for it, including ham and bacon.

  5. ‘Lowest common denominator’ does seem very apt.
And yes SIR Douglas, I watched my hometown die because of you. Thanks a bunch.
