The joy of a venue like the Civic is that it can provide a real sense of magic. A night out at the theatre for something as fun as the current season of the Sound of Music is great for families and amateur musical production fans from around the greater city region.

There’s a fear when performing a classic that it can’t match the expectation and with an opening panorama the expanse of the ‘hill are alive with the sound of music’ it’s an immediate challenge that has to be met. The clever use of on stage depth creates the illusion perfectly and from that point on, you appreciate you’re in the hands of professionals and relax. Expectations will be met.

Un-expectantly  funny in places, the performance is a total delight. While no one can ever be Julie Andrews, Bethany Dickson clinches the free spirited exuberance of Maria Rainer with glee. All the classics get their moment and the pace skips through at speed.

Special mention of Lesley Garrett as the Mother Abbess for an incredible voice.

A really lovely night out. 4 stars.

  1. Glad you got to enjoy the event, as we need to vent our senses and “stop and smell the roses” occasionally to find ourselves again in this disturbed world spinning out of control.

    Well done mate.

Reminded me as a boy going with the family to the local theatre to see the movie back in late 1950’s.
