Don’t think of it as reinvading Iraq, think of it as redecorating Iraq

I think some NZers view Iraq like an episode of The Block. Yes Iraq is the worst country on the street, but with a bit of elbow grease by our SAS and some great deals down at Bunnings, hey presto we can fix this Islamic State nonsense and have a new democracy flourishing there before the end of a TV season. Based on how easily the NZDF have manipulated the NZ mainstream media over our involvement in Afghanistan for the last decade,  the Army might suggest The Block does a room renovation challenge in downtown Mosul where Jo and Damo battle against Alex and Corban to bullet proof the bathroom extension.

Am I not taking this threat to our nationhood seriously? You are right. I am not.

The absurd ‘terrorism’ in Australia has managed to become a threat rather than the joke it is. A week after Abbott sends 600 troops into battle, there’s suddenly a ‘terror threat’ to Australia that required 800 police to arrest 1 person. That’s not a terror threat, that’s creating the threat of terror. And what exactly was the threat? Mass murder? Vast loss of life? Huge destruction of public and private property? No, it was one angry bloke planning with another angry bloke to attack a person in public………..so one life?

1 life = a terrorism plot? Really? Isn’t this a criminal issue with religious thugs rather than a terrorism issue? How many rapes, homicides and serious injuries occur in Australia every month from the domestic crime rate that would eclipse this so called terrorism?

I can’t take this threat by IS seriously, because the entire thing is a sick joke.

I refuse point blank to be frightened of Muslims in my community, and I refuse point blank to buy into any sudden need to go and bomb people in another country because I’m supposedly under threat. Reinvading Iraq to deal with a new angry militarised, radicalised religious group who have only been created out of the vacuum we from the West generated in the first place when we invaded Iraq on the false pretences of weapons of mass destruction is so intellectually invalid it really takes a special kind of stupid to support it.

Are IS awful? Sure are. Do they do terrible thing? Sure do. Is there injustice that needs justice? You betcha. But in case no one has noticed, we support and lightly scold a vast number of countries who are awful, terrible and commit injustices all the time but I don’t see the Prime Minister considering military strikes against Israel for its treatment of the Palestinians, or Egypt for their mass abuses, or Syria for their tens of thousands of dead, or Saudi Arabia for their religious punishments. When it comes to our selective morality, it simply looks like we take our conscience cue cards from America.

Which is really what these attacks against IS are all about now. Pride face saving on behalf of America who have once again managed to create a worse situation out of their playing God with an M16 in other people’s country’s.

The issue isn’t should we send in the SAS, the question should be, are we already via 5 Eyes providing target suggestions for US Drone strikes the way we do with Afghanistan? Do we already have blood on our hands?

There is no military solution here, I wonder how much more could be done to make the lives of those in these war torn outskirts of our economic wealth immeasurably better if the hundreds of millions in missiles and technological death we have already rained down upon them had been spent on aid and development instead.

Every drone strike we help aim creates another 10 terrorists. This is an episode of the Block that no team can ever win, despite all our desperate and empty cheering  from the comfort of our lounges so many thousands of kilometres away from the terrible reality.

  1. “Every drone strike we help aim creates another 10 terrorists.”
Someone, I think it was on this site, stated it very well along the lines of…
“American foreign policy consists of using a baseball bat to wack hornet nests”.

This from George Monbiot is also tongue in cheek but suggests we destroy the place rather than do a Block renovation… http://www.monbiot.com/2014/09/30/bomb-everyone/

  3. Please do send the cast and crew of The Block to meet IS. Those people scare me and their reign of terror over perfectly good houses is an affront to Western decency. The last time I was in Devonport I feared for my life because I was not wearing the religious attire that is the black puffy jacket and skinny jeans. If they are not stopped soon we will all join those extremists in the distorted facial expressions that hide self-inflicted groin injuries.

  4. Your article serves to reinforce the idea of war games. War turns ordinary people into murderers. And then it is glorified. And like any game a new version comes out every 6 months and the obsessed do not know when to stop.
