Would a National-Conservative Party reduce rights to an abortion? Legalise assaulting children? Make prostitution illegal, end gay marriage and implement climate denial policies?

With the possibility of a Conservative-National Party coalition looming, let’s consider the impact of this new hard right religious Government on social policy.

We know Conservative Party candidate Edward Saafi, believes the inability to legally bash your kids is responsible for teenage prostitution, teenage pregnancy and teenage suicide. This is a message he has been hammering in South Auckland churches.

Conservatives want to restrict abortion, legalise the right to hit children, oppose gay marriage, end legal prostitution and believe in climate change denial.

Key’s need to have the Conservatives prop him up means he would have to accept large chunks of crazy Conservative Party social policy that made it through the private Members Bill process.  One of Colin Craig’s bottom lines could be National supporting each of these through to their first reading. While none of these issues would be in direct threat of repeal or new legislation, we would have to expect 3 more years of Conservative’s trying to drag NZ back into the 1800s.

The advances of a modern civil society are under threat by the possibility of a National-Conservative Party Government and that should concern everyone to the left of Caligula.

  1. Yes, exactly, Martin. Which is what I’ve been warning about on my column in Gaynz.Com all year. Well spotted. I take it you’ve spotted the Family First Value Your Vote leaders religious social conservative ideological purity list in last week’s Sunday Star Times?

  2. What’s wrong with a party that wants to stick up for the rights of unborn NZ citizens? 25,000 are sucked out of women every year in this country, and you talk about the conservatives taking NZ back to the 1800’s? The fact that this most selfish of human practices is legally permitted in this country at all, makes a return to the 1800’s funnily enough seem like a step FORWARD in human societal evolution.
