  1. But mr b, aren’t his stats mostly bots, click farmed , … so the advertisers – Brian Edwards broken cat media lookin at you – are whistling in th wind?

  2. At the same time can we have a list of those who used to advertise on Whaleoil but now don’t? Good ethics should be rewarded just as much as bad ethics condemned.

    • Kudos to 2Degrees:

@Dianne_Khan Hi Dianne, we have been in touch with our media agency to pull the ads down. ^POB
      12:50 PM – 8 Sep 2014

  3. I noticed a lot of matchmaking/dating/hookup sites on the list. I would pity any Asian woman coming over here to meet a man who includes Whaleoil as one of his favourite sites. She deserves better.

    • The ads that you see when viewing the site are matched to your interests. So a bit of an own goal there with your comment Mike!

      • He noticed them on the LIST . Trust me I’m not the demographic for ” Hot Asian Ladies” but when I disabled adblocker and went to whaleoil to make a list of adverts they came up for me also.
So no own goal at all .

Good luck contacting the ‘ Get. Glasses ‘ I’ve emailed them – all I got back was an email asking if I was happy with their service .

Two companies that I have emailed ( New World & Hanmer Tourism ) have kindly replied to say they’re asking Google Ads to remove their adverts from Whaeloil ( apparently it’s not hard ) but I suspect it may be a lot like playing Whack-a -Mole …you get rid of one and another one pops up .

      • Hate to see what the Ad choices look like on the sites that Slater visits.

        They’d curdle milk, methinks.

  4. I have a Visa card and used to go to Auckland Uni. Can’t really boycott will write to both bodies expressing my feelings.

If John Key doesn’t rule out continued contact, that means that Whaleoil is keeping his power. What? How can a boycott of the actual site be implemented?

    • Maybe the email from Odgers re the chop chop comment, would be good enough for google to take the site down?
Don’t know how to do this though.

They took Whaledump off Twitter for exposing the emails, so surely the originator and subversive Slugman should be punished because of the obvious intent behind his blog site.

Maybe he can even be banned from using the Internet for a while.

      Opinion.

  5. Trouble is that whale oil has about 5 times the traffic you do so your boycott is of little consequence .
Even the greens at one time advertised on whale oil.

    • That’s not a trouble at all – Whale oils stats are an inflated illusion, we’ve done an examination of his stats and they don’t stack up. If you think fake bots are an audience, more fool the advertiser.

  6. Hi Martyn,

When Google advertising campaigns are set up to run with Adsense (what Whale Oil and yourself are using) targeting is done through in-market segments and affinity categories.

The campaign for Evo Cycles Pukekohe store you saw on Whale Oil Blog targets news content and current events.

I have now excluded Whale Oil from our campaign. This was not a specific target area for us but merely an included affinity category by Google.

Having said that any company who utilises googles remarketing opportunity will have ads showing on whale oil as they would be previous visitors to any particular website. For example your Adsense is showing two of my ads on this very page but I have no affiliation or deal with you regarding advertising.

I suggest you do some more reading about how Google Adwords works before trying to organise a boycott. And would like to reiterate that I have excluded WhaleOil from our campaign. (This can take up to 24 Hours to take effect.

    Good Day.

    Benjamin Pedley,
    Marketing Manager
    Evolution Cycles

    • Thank you for your comment Benjamin. Lots of us don’t know exactly how the ads work. Lots of us have been personally attacked by this vile man. Martyn, perhaps as a public service you could consider outlining exactly how businesses can make sure their ads do not appear on the WO site?

    • It’s not nice but here’s a screenshot of Slater’s right hand man, Pete’s comment to you today.

The fact is completely different though Nic. Slater and the whole of that poisonous and racist community hates bikes. He constantly derides them, hopes they get injured, calls cyclists “road maggots”, and laughs at what his sub-juvenile mind believes is a “Lycra-shield”.

Given that a site’s commentators reflect the behaviour and values of the opening posts it would be fair to assume that Pete is a liar of the greatest order, or failing that has as much self awareness as Slater himself, which is none whatsoever.

How could a blogger who hates cyclists and cycling with such a passion, so much so that he celebrates with video evidence whenever one is injured on the road, expect to have the goodwill of a company in the business of promoting cycling?

You were right to request a block on WO for adwords because you can be sure they all hate you and your business and want to see it fail.

  7. I already started to advise the beginning of this group that I and friends were boycotting them unless they publicly removed themselves from association with Whale oil. Only BRIDGESTONE replied to say they advertised with Google and had no say in their advert being placed on the Whale oil site.

  8. Yep, let’s do it and hit the buggers where it hurts them most. Boycott the services and hit them in their wallet!

Brian Edwards advertising on WhaleOil??? WTF!

  9. To those advertisers such as Evolution Cycles – do you or Google allow your ads to be placed on porn sites ? No didn’t think so. Companies have to be responsible for their product placement – if you are happy with being on a site run by a Cam Slater, don’t do anything, if you do not wish to be associated with WO, then you need to talk to your ad agency – if Google can block porn sites , they can block WO – it’s your business decision “at the end of the day”.

  10. Oh man, I am very upset to see Fertility Associates there. I feel sullied 🙁 Such a wonderful company that gave my my darling banshee – I can’t believe they’d be associated with such a hateful blog. Gutted 🙁

And 2Degrees, if you are still advertising there at the end of the month, I’m changing providers. Please change – I like your service.

  11. those organisations that may not be aware that their products or services are being advertised on WhaleOil, I reckon they need to wake up and show some corporate responsibility. Would they allow their ads to go on porn sites – no – and Google and Locallist block those as a matter of course – they can do same for other dirty undesirable sites if instructed by the business owners – think about it – would National Party allow their ads to go on the Internet Mana website ? No there would be a block – in this digital world it is possible – block http.www.whaleoil.co.nz

  12. Why does Newstalk ZB insist on giving Cameron Slater airtime? I would have thought they would have distanced themselves from him by now. Larry Williams appears to admire him too much.

    • I think it is time AJ, for Radio NZ to be given notice – or a petition – that we are not happy that they are allowing airtime for Cameron Slater.
If they continue, then it may be time for their advertisers to also be boycotted. Let them know that we mean business.
It is unacceptable for this disgusting person to be given such a privilege.

  13. This is totally the way to go. The point of any media is not the content but the advertising. The media is simply a vehicle to deliver advertising wrapped around content. When Paul Henry committed his racist rants I wrote not only to TVNZ and made a complaint to Broadcasting Standards but I also made a complaint ( I am sure along with others) to the advertisers who supported his programme. They started to withdraw their advertising almost immediately and it was at that point that TVNZ management started to take the issue seriously.

Advertising is the life-blood of the main stream media. I would also advocate boycotting the advertisers of any very biased or pro extreme National content. The way to moderate John Armstrong for example is not to go after him but after the print advertisers placed close to his column.

If any one wants to do an analysis of the main advertisers that support the worst offenders I would pledge to boycott them as well

    • Okay, reading the other posts above, perhaps Google has served up ads to people that have been to the Bachcare site and then eventually gone to Whale Oil. Google Ads target people, not websites per se. Anyway, I’ve asked our Google advertising agency to block the Whale Oil website.

Please remove our name from this list and please confirm.

Bachcare has never provided any support to WhaleOil. Not sure what you are on about?
