Latest attack on Kim Dotcom

Latest attack on Kim Dotcom is from a Christchurch musician Aaron Tokona who has decided to expose a trash talking game played by some of the other musicians during the recording of Kim’s album.

Russel Brown has posted a good blog unpicking the details and notes…

Whatever happened with trash talking and “racist day” it does seem clear that the game came from the African American members of the recording party.

…so a trash talk competition occurs with them trash talking Kim and Kim trash talking them. The reason why Aaron Tokona has decided to publicise this seems confused at best, Russel Brown again points out…

Tokona said he decided to talk about his experiences with Dotcom after receiving an email.“Tom Scott of HomeBrew, with the help of musicians around New Zealand, was organising a series of concerts up and down the country called Vote, to get people motivated to take part in the election,” Tokona said.

“But Kim Dotcom has directly stolen this idea and is doing the same thing.”

I can say that this is wrong. There is a music-themed get-out-the-vote project in development, but while Tom was part of early discussions he’s not involved with the organisation, which is quite advanced and has been co-ordinated via Loomio and email. (Apart from anything else, Tom’s not even in the country ay the moment.) I’m not involved but have stayed in touch on a journalistic basis. It’s not called Vote and the organisers are not particulary concerned about a Kim Dotcom-sponsored equivalent, if such a thing exists. So Aaron’s got that all wrong.

…so the reasons Aaron gives as his justification for going to the media don’t actually stack up. More interesting still, on Aaron’s Facebook page this morning he notes that if Kim called him again, he would still go work for him after a fellow musician challenged Aaron…

…right, so not a moral outrage great enough to justify not going back to work for Kim then?

I suspect Slater’s insinuation to Russel at the end of Russel’s blog that there is ‘more to come’ refers to old material disgruntled staff gave to Slater that he’s intending to drop just weeks before the election.

The Right’s need to discredit Kim before the July Court case when his evidence against Key is revealed means National’s favourite on-line attack dogs will be drip feeding all the out of context smears they can.

  1. The more they talk about KDC, the more votes the IP will get. You couldn’t buy this level of exposure.

  2. Vicki Anderson’s article says:

“The Mana Party has said that Dotcom may help it win the Maori seat of Waiariki at the next election”

This is the second time I’ve read this. Can someone provide evidence of a MANA spokesperson saying this?

  3. Martyn, hi. While this is an obvious attack on Dotcom, you haven’t addressed the situation itself. I remember being beaten down quite comprehensively when I stood up for the NZ Police over a perceived racism issue raised by Mr Collins. Now Dotcom seems caught in an *actual* blunt and, arguably, rather distasteful episode, but you are supportive of him/dismissive of the overtly racist actions. With respect, could you clarify your position?
    Thanks and regards

  4. KDC is a dangerous maverick to the political right. As a serially successful entrepreneur they would believe that his philosophy should align with theirs. The Internet Party provides a challenge to transNational’s “party of business” brand. The possibility of Midas in bed with Mana is stake-burning heresy – so, yes, KDC will be subjected to heat.

  5. The Left need to be VERY cautious about cosying up to dotcom, or it could come back to bite them in the arse. Were he any other person, the Left would be ALL over him, just as they were with Paul Holmes, Paul Henry and Ansell. Too many people are fooled by his charisma, there is much more to this man than meets the eye. Sometimes, where there is smoke, there really IS fire.

  6. No one has yet provided any evidence of wrong doing by KDC – as such the normal rules apply, ie the enemy of my enemy is my friend
