Headline: Tribute for Maungaharuru- Tangitu settlement
Labour Member of Parliament for Ikaroa-Rāwhiti, Meka Whaitiri paid tribute to Maungaharuru-Tangitu today as their Treaty of Waitangi settlement became law.
“The Bill acknowledges Treaty breaches that left Maungaharuru-Tangitu virtually landless. Today we were reminded of the history, mamae, loss suffered by this hapu.
“I wish to pay special acknowledge to lead negotiator, Tania Hopmans and other negotiators for the work and especially for the speed at which the settlement claims were presented.
“In conclusion, I would like to mihi to the people of Maungaharuru-Tangitu. As a descendant who shares much common whakapapa with these people, I am humbled to have been part of this special moment. This settlement offers commercial, financial and cultural redress and sets a platform for Maungaharuru-Tangitu to move forward”
