It has been a year today since we started The Daily Blog.

I started this blog after watching in horror the manner in which the mainstream media managed to manufacture a leadership coup and denigrate David Cunliffe at the 2012 Labour conference. The long line of Labour Party MPs who said they didn’t listen to the blogs has somewhat decreased since then.

The Daily Blog has managed with a vast variety of voices from the progressive left to provide an alternative narrative to the one the mainstream media constructs and within a year we have had some extraordinary achievements in terms of readership and causes.

Top month: February 2014 with 280,688 page views averaging 10,000 page views per day.

Top day, November 8, 2013 with 29,992 page views after the NZ Police threaten Martyn Bradbury over graphic criticising roast busters scandal.

2,742,763 page views
2,245,453 unique page views
1,315,884 visits
531,800 unique visits (actual individual people who repeatedly check the site out)

83% of total audience is New Zealand based.
51% of total traffic is Auckland based.
18.3% of total traffic is Wellington based; Christchurch 8.37%; Dunedin 4.15%; Hamilton 3.34%; Palmerston North 2.14%; Tauranga 1.57%; Nelson 0.93%; Lower Hutt 0.86%.

I am immensely proud of the activism we managed to generate around the GCSB mass surveillance legislation.

Selwyn Manning is an incredible collaborator and I salute his journalistic integrity and his skills. He is one of the best writers I know and without him this project could simply not have happened.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank Matt McCarten who helped foster The Daily Blog and help us with Union support from Unite, NZDWU, RMTU, MUNZ and MWU. It is the working men and women of those unions whom have provided the resource to make this occur. Your fight is forever our fight.

We would also like to thank all those who have written such incredible blogs, our list of bloggers is one of the great strengths of this site. Our deepest thanks to Aaron Hawkins, Allan Alach, Amanda Kennedy, Amnesty International, Bryan Bruce, Charles Chauvel, Chloe King, Christine Rose, Chris Trotter, Dianne Khan, Dr David Robie, Dr Wayne Hope, Efeso Collins, Frank Macskasy, Gareth Hughes, Gareth Renowden, James Ritchie, Jenny Michie, Jessie Hume, Julie Anne Genter, John Minto, Keith Locke, Keith Rankin, LadyMac, Laila Harre, Latifa Daud, Louisa Wall, Lynn Prentice, Marama Davidson, Matt Robson, Melissa Ansel-Bridges, Michael Timmins, Mika, Mike Treen, Moana Mackey, Morgan Godfery, Neesha Bremner, Penny Hulse, Phoebe Fletcher, Prof Jane Kelsey, Rachael Goldsmith, Samantha Anderson, Simon Prast, Steve Gray, Stuart Nash, Sue Bradford, Susan St John, Tali Williams, The Jackal, The Nomad and Tim Selwyn.

Finally thanks to you our reader, without you we would be nothing. Thank you for your support, your comments and your donations.

Our goal here is to change the Government and have the issues of social and economic justice addressed. We look forward to the election and the debate.

Much respect.

  1. It’s been a year already?!

    Dayum!

Time really flies when you’re having fun!

Congratulations Martyn, Selwyn, and all the other bloggers – this has been an amazing venture (and all achieved without government subsidies or tax breaks!!).

It’s been a privilege for me to contribute in my own small way, and I look forward to supporting TDB in future.

    Rock on!

    • Cheers Frank… The fraternity, the collective of writers, and the commentariat all make this project very worthwhile… Frank I have to say your contribution has been huge on all three fronts…

      An amazing year…

  2. Happy Birthday indeed ‘ The Daily Blog ‘ . This wondrous place , a mirage with substance , has been my vent for the fumes and gasses I need to puff . And let me also say well done ‘ Tumeke ‘ for leading me this way , from out of the waste lands of the banal and the Lost .
The Daily Blog has given us all so much to be thankful for . It’s United us , enlightened us , comforted us and has given us solace when the world of NZ / Aotearoa appears to be only inhabited by fools , liars and swindlers .
It’s Happy Birthday The Daily Blog but it’s The Daily Blog that gives us the birthday presents . Well done and Ho Ra !

  3. Congratulations TDB, Martyn and regular contributors.

Long may this great blog site continue to reign supreme as a voice for the left.

Just one question. Will Cameron Slater be invited to the birthday bash?

    • If Slater is invited, it will end up a bash.

Congrats to the Daily Blog team, kudos for a job well done!

  4. A big heartfelt thank you to all of you who had the gumption and drive to set up The Daily Blog – and keep it going.

Information and diversity of opinion is so very important for creating a sound democracy and you have helped to create a counteraction to the rot we are fed by our mainstream media sources.

Kudos to you all and thank you.

  5. HAPPY BIRTHDAY! Fantastic job, sensitivity and imagination the divining principles that make us all human, really human. The Daily Blog for the people who care about life, passion, environment, people, animals, being fair and honest. You must prevail and save this place.

  6. Congratulations Martyn and Selwyn, what an achievement to open up this public space. Best wishes to all the contributors who have helped this mission go so far!

  7. Congrats to you guys and gals for making TDB what it is. I attended the anti GCSB meeting at AKL Town Hall, and as well as giving me hope that the “progressive” groups in NZ can actually work together, and showing me that sleepy Kiwis can be awakened, it inspired me to become more politically active. I believe that, by working together, we will make 2014 a very special year, and help New Zealand to become the best country in the world for all of us who are lucky enough to live here!

  8. Yep,three cheers for Martyn alright.Crickey dick ,I shudder to think where N.Z might be without his efforts. From Tumeke(which I lucked onto whilst desperately looking for an alternative to the banal,weak,unprofessional,oned-media that inhabits this country),to the never miss an episode of citizen A ,where Martyn’s forceful veracious summaries always had me saying yes,yes and yes,” he’s hit the nail on the head yet again”.What a fantastic pool of writers he has accumulated who have given me such an insight as to what’s really going on out there.Just the beginning I suspect.Great work, many thanks.Best is yet to come!

  9. Well done to all contributors and supporters. The main left blogs all have their own flavour, style and emphasis, long live TDB!

  10. Happy Birthday TDB, 1 year old and you have covered so much in that time and frightened the life out of many right wing and MSM idiots who 1 year ago scoffed at you. You have brought enlightenment to so many who were in the dark. Keep up the good work here’s to the next big year! Big up’s for Martyn and Selwyn

  11. Big ups and happy birthday from us bloggers, too!

Without you, Martyn & Selwyn, we wouldn’t have half the voice we’ve created together. You guys are pretty dang rock’n’roll; you had a great idea and took a huge chance and I’m so glad it has all worked out. It’s such a pleasure to be here!

And to those who take time to comment on the blogs, you continue the debate and add such flavour and relevancy, no matter your political stance. Big ups to you all!!

    xx BoT
