Key panics and drops Slater in it – why opposition MPs would visit Dotcom

GCSB Waihopai Dome Collapsed

This is what a panicked Prime Minister looks like…

Looks like Slater is Key’s Peters source
Prime Minister John Key has given his “100 per cent” assurance that intelligence agencies were not spying on Winston Peters, indicating his source was controversial blogger Cameron Slater.

…by attempting to insinuate dodgy deals with Dotcom, Key announced to the world that Winston Peters had been to see Kim 3 times. The immediate question to that was ‘how do you know’? By attempting to spin the meetings as sinister, the blowback was the impression that Key had used the GCSB to spy on Dotcom, again. To get out of this, Key had to drop Slater in it as the source. This isn’t smart politics because Slater is too radioactive and the implications of direct contact between the Prime Minister of NZ and a blogger who has the track record of hate that Cam has managed to amass could have far ranging ramifications this election.

The insinuation of deals done with Kim misses of course the reason why Opposition MPs should be talking to Dotcom. John Armstrong lambasts Russel Norman for daring to voice an opinion while admitting he had met with KDC as some sort of moment of blinded madness, what Armstrong and David Farrar so conveniently ignore is the mass irregularities in Dotcom’s arrest. They ignore the illegality of Dotcom’s arrest, they ignore the subservience of NZs intelligence agencies to the US and they ignore the manner in which every agency has lied and deceived the public while expanding mass surveillance powers to the GCSB.

Every opposition MP should be visiting Dotcom to hear what he has to say about his case, and that’s because his case is deeply political and amounts to revoking our sovereignty to America. Trying to take the illegalities the NZ State has perpetrated on KDC and spin it into dodgy political deals with opposition MPs when John Banks is the one in court for deceptive political disclosure, when it is John Key who cuts dodgy deals for ACT, United Future and possibly the Conservative Party and when it is the National Government that gerrymanders the one seat MMP rule – to ignore all that in favour of dodgy opposition deal narratives is just another example of how extremely biased the mainstream media are in this country.

Dotcom’s case is 100% political and opposition MPs should see him because of that. What is of question here is that the Prime Minister of NZ relies on Cameron Slater so often for information.

What’s more dangerous to NZ? Opposition MPs talking with Kim Dotcom, or the leader of our nation talking regularly with the most far right blogger in the country?

  1. The only problem here is that in a few years, Key and Dotcom will be gone, and we’re still stuck with Slater. This focus should be on him. The rest is a side show.

Name calling doesn’t seem to help much. Everyone is calling him everything under the sun.

Why doesn’t someone take that guy down? He must have made mistakes? He can’t be short of enemies?

  2. Without wanting to come across as being crude, I can only compare John Key’s association with Cameron Slater to scratching or picking the remaining remnants off a backside!

  3. I doubt very much Cameron Slater is the original source of this information. He would have to be staking out KDC’s mansion 24/7 to know exactly how many times people have been to visit him. Cameron understands that he has to take the hit for the team, so is willing to provide Key with an alibi.

    • My sentiments entirely! Slater is a convenient scapegoat – no one likes him. I can just vision Slater prowling around the KDK mansion 24/7, binoculars in hand, hat and tent…. Rubbish. This information has come courtesy of emailing hacking and phone tapping or tracing!

      • Or maybe from Winnie himself – he isn’t exactly known for his discretion so no doubt blabbed/boasted to someone about his dates with KDC & that person went on to blab too.

  4. The siinplest explanation is that the NZ Police has Kim Dot Com under continual surveillance, and the pm is being told about the interesting observations. (As Pablo says on Kiwipolitico) I haven’t seen Key being asked if the police is the source. The romance of spies mean that commentators try to hang it on the GCSB or SIS instead.

  5. John Key didn’t specifically say that Cameron had told him, he said “contrary to what you might want to believe I can read, it happened to be in the New Zealand Herald, it happened to be on the Whale Oil website, and a member of the public, basically for want of a better term, rang me up and said what was the case,”

But he did confirm he talks regularly with Cameron.

Have to say as a centre-right voter I am extremely disappointed that Key himself gives more oxygen to the ego that is Cameron Slater. I had hope he was not on the same page as Judith Collins.

But in terms of pragmatism – why not. Like him or not Slater Junior is proving to be rather resourceful in terms of tips etc so if he has info why not use it. He will outrun his welcome eventually as he is doomed to be the master of his own misfortune, but that doesn’t mean we can’t take advantage of the resources he has on tap now. No doubt he is but one of many sources Key “regularly chats with” (quote from Stuff).

As for KDC – the whole investigation was a complete whitewash & he has good grounds to push for a grievance. However, I think that even if his actions are not illegal they are amoral & he is part of the industry of rip-offs & is no different to those who sell Marc Jacobson knock-offs.

BUT that doesn’t mean to say that he should not be afforded the same legal rights in terms of search warrants etc as all other NZ citizens.

The GCSB were completely out of line & Key should acknowledge this.

As for opposition leaders talking with KDC – there is merit to that however, probably not much more than suggesting everyone talk to WO. NZ politics should preclude such jesters; they make a mockery of our political system.

  6. “John Banks is the one in court for deceptive political disclosure…”
Exactly. Ten out of ten for The Daily Blog. Banks is not charged with electoral fraud, which some commentators have stated. Electoral fraud, as I understand it, is much more serious and involves fiddling with the actual voting process in one way or another.

  7. Whose electorate is Kim Dotcom living in? The prime ministers. Last election you couldn’t get 10 yards between keys billboards out there. That he has a bach in his electorate and thus gets around not living there is bad enough, but keeping tabs on one of his own constituents visitors however he is doing it, smells of something very fishy.
